Is a summer program worth it?

I live in Canada and took the PSAT earlier this month for the first time. I am now in grade ten, and plan to take the PSAT and SAT later on.
Are summer programs such as the ones at Columbia and Harvard worth applying for?
Do they really help you out in the long run, or are they a waste of a few thousand dollars? I am interested in attending one next summer or the summer afterwards.
Also, is there anything I should really consider that would make my chances of getting accepted in one of these programs if they are worth it?
I'd appreciate any advice I can get!

I think it really depends on what program you attend and/or what you take away from it. There’s a good list of prestigious programs here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/343495-summer-programs-look-good-college-applications.html</a>
Or you could just search these forums for whatever subject you’re interested in, and there will probably be a thread listing some related summer programs.

Agreed, but this might be helpful too. Good luck!

So would programs like ones at Columbia or Harvard basically just be a waste of money? Or do you think they are basically a waste of money?

If you are only doing it to make your college application look better then Harvard and Columbia’s programs may be a waste of money.

If you are excited about studying XYZ and living on a college campus for a part of your summer then it may be worth it.

Sure, it will help you know the campus better and allow you to make a more informed decision. Wrt admissions, it confers no benefit.
