is a water boiler / heater allowed in muir?

just a quick question before the big move in weekend, im in muir, and i need to know if they allow water boilers (and/or other heating type appliances, out of curiosity) . ive been told by my girlfriend colleges dont, but i cant find said rule. soooo, CC experts, do they?

edit: p.s. if not, could someone point out to me where said rule is specified?

i don't believe they are, but we had two in my [revelle] suite and never had any problems with it. you'll probably have to secure a copy of the housing contract ... but i won't be the one to do that for ya ;)

We had one in my room last year (ERC) and my friend in Revelle had one. We didn't observe any problems.

an outline of pretty much everything that is/isn't allowed at muir. it doesn't really say anything too specific about cooking to begin with but you should really be fine.

http://provost.ucsd.edu/muir/studentlife/reslife/documents/Handbook0708.pdf

i don't see why not.

i'm bringing one

HOT PLATES AND COOKING APPLIANCES

Fire regulations dictate that no cooking appliances
with exposed heating elements are permitted. Students
found in violation will be directed to remove the appliance.

that's the most google's spitting out, from the ERC reslife handbook

team.katie's link was very helpful, i now also know more stuff than what i started out looking for, thanks.

and yeah, i found that line too, astrina. im still iffy on whether a water boiler has 'exposed heating elements'. on one hand, the metal plate at the bottom of each and every could be such, but on the other its always under water = no possible fire? oh, the dilemna. college has already begun.

just hide it well ... same goes for booze and other contraband.

(one guy across the way was growing a little weed plant under his bed ... got the lights and stuff rigged up and everything!)

wow O_O. and i was just thinking of putting an under-the-bed box. i see hes already working on his scholarship.

Under-the-bed hydroponics would make a nice dissertation topic

So does this mean no irons for the clothes?

lol i'm fairly certain that irons are allowed.

UC San Diego Housing Rates and Services

it specifically states to bring an iron

at revelle parent orientation we were told to "take home" any items with exposed heating elements such as:

george foreman grills or similar sandwich grills
toasters
toaster ovens
hot plates
those water heating thingies that you stick into a cup to boil water

also verboten are:

halogen lamps
incense
candles
firecrackers, airguns & other firearms (duh)

on the OK list were:

<500 watt microwave ovens
< 5 cu ft mini fridge
iron & ironing board
rice cookers
electric teapots

halogen lamps were OK in revelle if you had one of those wire covers installed over the bulb ... i just think they wanted to prevent anything from falling onto the bulb and catching on fire.

haha well my suitemate had a coffee maker and water boiler
and in our room we had a hot plate

so as long as you dont burn down the building i think youll be fine

well phrased gracie.

well phrased.
