is ABET accreditation required?

Just to update, I contacted both my Dean and ABET. I contacted ABET 3 times and what my Dean says conflicts with what ABET tells me is going on with the program. I have spoken to 3 people at ABET regarding this issue and all of them tell me that my program is not even undergoing pre-approval, which my university told me twice that it’s undergoing pre-approval. I spoke to the dean and he claimed that in 4 years the program will be accredited (although he told the current senior class that they were going to be accredited by the time they were seniors and they still aren’t accredited.) Even if that’s the case the accreditation probably wouldn’t even apply to me if it happened. Since this is the case I’ve been looking into transferring out. I looked into transferring to URI but ABET is a requirement for transferring my credits to URI. Any good recommendations regarding places I could transfer to which would take most, if not all of my engineering credits? I looked into Wentworth and it seems promising. They don’t seem to care if it’s ABET or not for transfer credits.

ABET accredits engineering programs, not individual courses. What you need to do is find out what classes would transfer to another university and whether the credit you receive would apply toward an engineering degree. In some cases, allowed transfer classes will apply toward the degree but additional classes (eg additional math) may be required to satisfy ABET program requirements. In other cases, such as technology classes, credit may be awarded but not be accepted toward the degree. You need to talk to a transfer advisor at each school.

URI accepts some transferred J&W courses for subject credit. Follow the link under Option 1 at http://web.uri.edu/transfer/transfer-credits-to-uri/
