Ok, well I am a little concerned I might be sending too much to Princeton. As of now all my essays are a little long (though within the word limits for each prompt). Additionally, after receiving approval from Princeton, I wrote a 400 word "Why Princeton" essay (I basically go on to tell them in the essay that I would enroll if accepted...which might matter cuz im from Nebraska). My summer essay is also about 200 characters short of the max 2500 letters. Then, on top of that, I am planning on sending in a supplementary rec from a Congressman who I grew up knowing. So, am I flooding Pton with too much stuff?

Why the why princeton essay? Is it really an exceptional one, be careful with sending extra essays! I would be really hesitant with sending that. Do you really know the congressman well? Does he give a new insight to your application(so if he write about ec’s academics etc do not send it) Why did you choose the congressman to write the recommendation? I sent an additional reccomendation, but it was written by a friend of mine who I know from when I was 3. It had nothing to do with the rest of my application really, and that is why I send it. So, only send additional recs, essays etc. if it adds a new dimension to your app

o right, why does it matter whether your from nebraska or not?

I thought being from NE might help as Pton prbly wants to get at least one kid from every state. So, letting them know that I’d enroll if admitted, COULD (it might not) help tip me into the accepted pile as id fill tht spot for them.

My main concern was the congressional letter. The congressman is a fairly distinguished man and serves as a ranking member of a committee in Washington. My friends seem to think that having him write a letter would make adcoms give my app a second look. Is this true? I mean I know him personally and I spent about 250 hours volunteering for him. However, I want to be a BIO major. Yet, other ppl have said to just send it as it couldnt hurt.

Additionally, with the Why Pton essay, Princeton said it would be fine to attach it. They wouldnt say they’d have no problem with me writing one and then come back and say it hurt my app would they?

I dont think, if pton approves of the essay, that it would hurt ur app. Well the thing is with those types of extra recs, is that it may come across as “I submitted this rec because the writer is important and that will impress you”. The adcoms dont really care about whom you know, they want to know you, so does the ltter give insight about who you are and what you will bring to the college–> yes send it HOWEVER, if it does not –>shut it down

i would not send the congressman’s letter, Rtgrove. i have read in admissions books that having a person in a high place write a LOR for you will not help you significantly, and if you’re sending them something extra anyway i would worry about overflow. i don’t know about the essay, though. probably won’t do much.

Na, I didnt feel that the essay or LOR would help significantly. However, I feel I am borderline for Pton as of now and am looking for a potential tipping factor. Do you believe a why pton- if written well- would help more than a congressional LOR?

personally, for your first choice i think that the school-specific extra essay might be a good idea (if well-written), but i honestly haven’t a clue. i think you’re a very strong applicant and the fact that you’re from nebraska + the supplemental essay expressing your undying love for princeton might well be a tipping factor. who knows? i just heard that the congressional rec won’t really give you a tip. but the essay might.

in other words, i’d include the essay if you think it is very good, but not the supp. LOR. then again i’m no michele hernandez.

Kids, you don’t have to max out every single word on your essay to get in. I know because one of my essays consisted of a grand total of 3 sentences.

What you’ll all no doubt learn is that what you write in those 2500 letters is far more important than reaching 2500 letters. Be concise and don’t worry if you’re 200 letters off or 500 letters off.

Good luck

No, I was actually concerned that the essay was too long. I elaborated on my clubs a bit in my summer essay though. Would anyone be willing to read it and tell me if I went to indepth in that paper?

Why? It all just seems like overkill. Personally, I would not send the Congressman’s letter. I doubt they will care that he is a high-ranking official, especially considering he’s not even in your academic area of interest. If anything I’d imagine it would come off as somewhat artificial.

As for the “Why Princeton” essay, it’s up to you. I am, however, inclined to believe that if they cared, they’d have it as part of the application.

don’t send the letter unless you’ve really worked personallly and extensively with him, and it comes through in the letter

Hmm ok I think I wont send it then. However, I’ll prbly send in the Why Pton essay as I worked hard on it and feel that theres a chance it could help.

I’m not an expert, but I really doubt that sending in more essays and recommendations would hurt you. In the worst case scenario, they might just not help at all.

I don’t think the why princeton essay would help, I completely agree with evertheoptimist.

Well, idk. I could definately see the congressional LOR not helping (thats really the reason I made this thread.) However, here is my logic in sending the Why Pton essay. I could be wrong, so correct me where needed.

One, I am from an underrepresented state (Nebraska). While thats not a huge deal, Pton does prbly want to get a least one kid from every state. So, they prbly will have to admit more than one kid per state because the theres a chance tht if Pton takes a kid, then so will Harvard, Yale, and Stanford. Thus, Pton might b a bit concerned in ensuring it gets its one student per state here in the midwest. So, if they across a kid like me from Nebraska who is borderline for pton (2340 SAT, Val, state-though few national- awards, and good recs/essays) and who also basically explicitly says that if he will enroll at pton if admitted, the letter could be the impetus that drives them to admit tht kid. Just my thoughts though…im no expert at all here.
