Is Amherst credible?

Well up until a couple of weeks ago, ive never heard of amherst college [until they sent me a packet for DIVOH] so im going to ask. is Amherst a good school? is it known [is it just me since i live on the west coast?]? and what is it good at?

oh and i applied for DIVOH does anybody know when we find out if youre in or not?

Time to do your homework. Start with the website. www.amherst.edu Look at some books: The Best 361 Colleges, Peterson’s etc. Send for their brochures.

No, it is not credible. In fact, it is freaking unbelievable.

sarcasm?

@ShesOnHerWay
i did my research but i didnt get very far
on us news its not even ranked for national unis but its like #1 for LAC’s
and thats it.

national universities are a different category from liberal arts colleges. still, amherst is one of the most well regarded schools in the country.

By the way, I think Williams is going to top Amherst this year. Boo. We’ll find out in under 2 weeks

The man in charge of the USNWR rankings once made the claim that Dartmouth would unquestionably trump both Amherst and Williams if it were considered a liberal arts college. His clear bias is the reason I can’t take their rankings seriously. The arbiters of those rankings have no idea what they’re doing, and they’re merely patronizing the LACs.

I digress.

I have a feeling the schools will be tied again, if Amherst does not place first. The former more likely than the latter.

I think Williams might top Amherst because Princeton Review and Forbes have placed Williams a lot higher than Amherst this year.

Hilikeyoux3, doesn’t sound like Amherst is for you. If you haven’t figured out (from your research) that it’s one of THE topic liberal arts colleges in the nation and LAC colleges are different from universities, then you should just stick with what you know. Because you haven’t heard of an institution doesn’t mean much. I live in California and my daughter goes to Amherst. Lots of people out here have not heard of Amherst. But, those people who know top liberal arts colleges know it instantly and are extremely impressed that my daughter is a student there.

wow. so i guess amherst is a really good school - bc the onnly east coast LAC ive ever heard of is middlebury.

what is amherst good at? math science english poli sci?

Hiilikeyoux3,
Your questions are too broad for this board. It really shows that you haven’t done any research on your own. If Middlebury is the only LAC you know, then you have a lot of research to do. Please don’t ask others to do it for you. And, yes, by asking such broad questions, you are asking others to do your work for you.

now you know. . . .middlebury, amherst, wesleyan, wellesley, and many others are exceptional schools for those who prefer a smaller environment. you are from the west coast and, no doubt, know of the claremont schools but there are dozens of others with similar credentials throughout the country. talk to your GC if you are looking in that direction.

Just go to Stanford.

don’t you you have a college counselor you can speak with to help you better understand the various types of college (versus universities - private versus public, etc.). You really should do extensive research before you come on line and appear that you’ve done little or no research.

It’s not ranked under national universities because it’s not a national university. Please, go do some research. Then, if you still have questions, I’m sure people will be more than willing to help.

Welcome to CC! The above is a snippet of the CC culture towards “newbies”. :)

When I first came here, I used the search function a lot. Just use terms like: best departments, majors, *specific major", prestige, etc, etc.

Anyway, this is the WSJ ranking for top feeder schools to elite business, medical and law schools.

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Stanford
Filliams
Duke
Dartmouth
MIT
Amherst
Swarthmore
Columbia
Brown
Pomona
UChicago
Wellesley
UPenn
Georgetown

For a student preference ranking:

Harvard
Caltech
Yale
MIT
Stanford
Princeton
Brown
Columbia
Amherst
Dartmouth
Wellesley
UPenn
U Notre Dame
Swarthmore
Cornell
Georgetown
Rice
Filliams
Duke
UVirginia

Take both rankings with a pinch of salt.

Probably the best CC thread ever on the subject:
