Is Amherst worth $10,000 more?

@PurpleTitan

Yes, and they’re called, full-pay families.

@ciruitrider we are paying $60k more for D to go to Amherst than UofM. We are not full pay, but are able to afford it without jeopardizing our retirement, and without taking out loans, although it will certainly mean careful living for the next few years, which is fine. We are lucky to have grandparents in the picture who are happy to support her decision emotionally and if necessary, financially - so we are able to take the risk a little more easily.

It was not a decision we made lightly, but partway through our search it became clear that D had no interest in going to any large school, or even medium size, and we told her that she could go to the school she wants to go to, since we believe that college is important and worth paying for.

My main regret is not finding CC earlier in the process and realizing how many great LACs (possibly with some merit) there really are.

Dear me, I forgot to add that I hope the OP chose Bryn Mawr, that seemed like the best fit!

What did you decide, @glittervine?

Well, I told my grandmother that I was going to go to Bryn Mawr because of the money. She asked if I loved Amherst more, which indeed, yes. Because she didn’t want me to choose for financial reasons, she agreed to pay the difference for Amherst so that my parents can afford it.
So, happy ending! Although I liked Bryn Mawr a great deal, my grandma’s generosity made it possible for me to attend Amherst after all. :slight_smile:

Congratulations! I’m so happy things worked out for you! You will LOVE Amherst.

Congratulations - You will be getting the finest education the US has to offer! I hope you really enjoy your time there.

If things ever get tough for u at Amherst, dig deep in your soul and get the job done for Granny. She sounds.like a wonderful lady.

Two points: The Amherst “premium” you are paying is, fortunately, not in the form of loans. And secondly, I’m guessing that the same premium on top of Michigan’s in-state tuition and fees results in a radically different EFC than the same premium on top of say, a Wesleyan or a Williams EFC.

As an aside, I’m thrilled for the OP, too.

That’s so great OP! A truly happy ending :slight_smile:
