I just took the ACTs officially for the first time without any preparation and I got a 29 as a composite score, a 32 in English, a 31 in reading, a 28 in math, and 25 in science. I took the ACT plus writing, but I haven't gotten my essay score yet. I plan to take the ACTs again in September after prepping over the summer and I hope to raise my score to a 30. Is my current score good enough to give me a chance at selective liberal arts schools like Haverford, Barnard, and Vassar?

Vassar’s ACT composite range is 29 to 32, so you would be at the 25th percentile.

It would not be helping very much. You can get that science up–it really does not require knowledge of science so much as it requires interpretive reading. You could prep yourself into the 31-32 composite range, I should think, and that could only help your admission prospects. Also check to see if the schools you are interested in superscore the ACT–i.e., take the best subscores from different test dates to create a composite. That would mean that your English and reading scores are now the worst that would be included in your composite.
