I took the AP U.S. History exam as a junior and got a 4. If I add this to my college application, will it look good or bad at top schools like Notre Dame and Georgetown? Can it hurt my chances?

no… a 4 is pretty good …

Oh please.

a 4 is kind of bad.

I wouldn’t suggest putting it on

hmm…I think a 4 is worth putting. I couldn’t see it being a detriment to an application.

Are you serious?

Sometimes this board cracks me up. I’d say even list a 3 because if you took an AP class and don’t report the score (for example in common app where it directly asks) the assumption would be a 1 or a 2. Self studies, I’d say 4 or 5, though.

Don’t put it on. They’ll laugh at you when they see it.

THEY will reject you!!!

i have a question to add to this, i would create my own thread but it feeds off his quesiton…junior year i was in an honors stats class and took the AP exam and got a 3…worth mentioning to places like northeastern and fordham and bentley?

Report it, a 4 is basically a B and U.S is tough exam, if it was a three, eh. Another poster made a good point, you took the class and if you don’t report it then the college might assume you got a one or a two on it so I’d send it in.

WOW DON’T YOU DARE LIST A 4…that’s like putting yourself on the ultimate blacklist from every college!!

just totally disregard what collegeboard says about a 3 being “passing”, everyone knows if you don’t get a 5 on every single AP test, you’re a complete idiot=)

these posts are so silly, i can’t tell who’s joking and who isn’t! YES LIST A 4! besides, AP scores are not used for admission, only placement/credits later. most moderators, etc. on CC have frequently said this. no need to even submit them now; actually save your money, and only “list” unofficially on your app.

haha! sleepy sentry, as a good omen i became a senior member on your post! :)

OK, give the kid a break. Why are you all so mean and elitist?

Here is a direct quote from the Notre Dame Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Evaluation Criteria Website;

“SAT IIs, AP tests and IB tests are only used in the application process if scores enhance an application. They are also used for credit and placement in the First Year of Studies.”

In other words your 4 will not hurt you, it just may not “add” anything to your package. And for those of you who are so cynical that you don’t believe what they publish on their own site than maybe you should be sure and apply to a few liberal arts school just in case…

wait you got a 4… just stop applying to schools now.

have you considered community college? maybe a 5th year of hs?

wait, so if I got a 2 on the AP US (well it’s partly because someone cheated and we had to retake the test), do I not put in on my MIT/UC app?

it doesnt matter! AP SCORES DONT MATTER!

^ Amen!!!

as previously stated…they only matter for placement and credits. your transcript will show the rigor of your courseload. THAT MATTERS!
