Is an average junior year catastrophic?

Hi CC,
Being that it looks like I will be ending junior year with an uncharacteristically average GPA (as compared to sophomore and freshman years). By average, I mean potentially 2 C’s, and the rest in A/A- range with a possible B+. Now this ultimately comes down to me, but there were extenuating health circumstances that came up this year, and as a result, I didn’t perform to my full academic potential. Is this absolutely frowned upon to admissions counselors? Would they take the health circumstances, if explained, into account? Can stellar senior year grades somewhat redeem what is in my mind an abysmal performance junior year? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

It would have been good to work with your teacher/GC about the health issues during the semester…
Can you talk to them now and see if there is any make up work you could do? Extra credit?
GCs can include info about your health on your application.

There are many colleges that you can get into with one year of “average GPA”. The most selective ones may be out of reach, but if your test scores are good and you have done well enough in other years that your average GPA is still OK, then there are many good colleges that will accept you.
