I tried to cut down some unnecessary words,
but it's like short story of an experience,
so I can't really reduce the size.
Should I rewrite a new one about a different topic?

i have the same problem…
mine is the story of my LIFE, so it’s difficult to reduce haha

As long as you don’t go over 1000 words, it should be fine.

If you can’t reduce it any further, don’t worry about it.

I mean, if it gets your idea across in as few words as possible while still being well written, there’s nothing wrong with it being 850 words.

No, always reduce it to around 500.

I’d say you’re pushing it. Unless those are the most amazing 800+ words ever (in which case it wouldn’t matter if it were 1000 words–but unless you’re the next pulitzer winner or you have some freaking good story to tell, I wouldn’t count on it), you really need something closer to 500.

Not necessarily. If it is good, it’s good and you don’t need to shorten it. Of course it is on the longer side, but it’s not a huge issue. If you want to PM it to me, I’ll check it out and let you know if I feel like it reads too long. I’ve already been accepted to school by the way, so no worries.

Not necessarily. Mine was 901 words and I got into my top choice school. It all depends. You could PM it over if you’d like.

If it’s very readable and light, you’ll be fine at that mark. There are 500 word essays that seem like 1000 words because they are so dense and boring, and vice-versa. Generally, I recommend to try and cut as many words out until taking out one more word ruins the essay. If you’re at 850, you could probably cut it down to 650 with some very hard work. I think mine were around 700, and I got into schools (uber top choice- pwnd Jordi), so yeah.

PM me your essay if you want me to take a look.

I can help you cut down some words, just PM me your essay.

you can PM me. i can help you if you want.

Would any of you still be willing to look over a 1000 word essay? Please let me know thanks.

i have the same problem, can anyone help?

Everyone chill. My Common App is a little under 1000 words and I am confident colleges won’t look down on it. There is no word limit. Write what you think will get you into college.

I wouldn’t, personally, since it says better safe than sorry. 800+ words is significantly different than 500, and i’m sure admissions officers will be able to tell. The common app says to limit your essay to 500 words, so just follow directions and do it ^^

hey fellow indian

i would love to help with your essay
PM it to me

thanks

yeah i’ll read 1000+, still need someone too?

ugh u ppl disgust me

The Common Application does not provide a limit. You are wrong.

I’m not encouraging length essays, I’m just saying there are by no means unacceptable in the college admissions process. Certain writers can pull it off.

Is there actually any place on the common app website that says 500 words or is this just the unwritten standard?

i dont think it matters
as long as each sentence in your essay has a purpose, it wont matter…

mine is almost 900 rite now…
