Hi!

So I'm going to be a Communications major and I am going to apply to schools like UPenn, UCLA, Stanford, etc. I do have a safety in UT (top 10 in-state). So, I've been considering acquiring an internship at a local news team, a local radio joint, or a local paper. However, I already have a pretty full schedule for summer. My question is how much would an internship help my app? Also, any suggestions on places or anything would be great! Thanks a bunch!

not much. the places you’re applying to are more interested in other elements of your app than experience in the major because they know your major is likely to change. They are not trade schools. Presumably you have something on your ECs that says “interest in communications,” and that should be enough. Even if you don’t have it, these schools won’t much care.

Hmm I disagree. I believe, for the reason you stated, that an internship would prove noteworthy. 1) not many others have that on an application 2) it shows you can already handle the amount of dedication it will take in college to involve yourself in extracurriculars (such as an internship), and your studies. If you think it is tough now, wait until you get more work.

I agree with jkeil911 for college applications it won’t matter much BUT for a job after graduation it will matter a lot.

So basically I should do internships when I actually get INTO college as opposed to doing them right now, while I am a high school student?

I would do them now because they’ll help you land better internships in college.
