Is an outside college counselor needed?

I’m the first person in my immediate family to apply to a college in the US. Because of this and because I go to a public school, my resources aren’t as plentiful as some people. Should I get a college counselor to make sure I do everything the right way (applications, essays, financial aid, etc)? Any tips or suggestions?

I would certainly make the most of whatever resources you have at your school. Who else could help you from their own expertise?

Some colleges post useful guidance about applying on their websites, including essay advice.
You may also find it helpful to read a book with an overview of the whole process, like “Admission Matters”.

If you mean like those college counselors that you can hire, why not?
As long as you guys can afford it, don’t go out of your way to get one though; i know they can get quite pricey.
