IS and Engineering

Hi I got accepted into CMU's IS program and was wondering would it be difficult or even possible if i were to do a double major in engineering?

Also if i were to realize that IS is not for me. How hard would it be to switch majors?

Hope to hear from you and thanks in advance for your inputs.

A lot of people have been asking questions about transferring between schools and everyone seems to have a different answer. I would call CMU and ask or wait and see if a current student has ever heard of someone from IS double majoring in engineering.

I’m majoring in IS and I plan to minor in German. When I went to to admitted students they told me at the IS that it’s very possible to minor/major in H&SS because IS is in it. And that people also do double major outside of H&SS. But let me remind you if you do double major in engineering your going to have a really heavy course work and may have to stay an extra semester or take summer classes. Minoring in the engineering would be much more easy on you so I recommend that. I suggest you look through an IS textbook to get a feel for the material, see beforehand what you think

Ah Great! Thanks for the valuable inputs :)

I’ve never heard of any specific students doing it, but it’s generally considered that IS is the “lighter” coursework version of CS, and I know there are some insane people who double major in engineering and CS. So if you’re very adept at your coursework, I’m sure you could handle it. Just don’t, y’know, plan to go out on weekends.

Not sure if policies have changed, but when I was in the engineering college if you planned on double majoring then CIT would have to be your “home” college. That means you’d be a major in some sort of engineering with a double major in IT.

Thanks guy! Will check out with the academic advisors at CMU. Appreciate your comments :)
