Is anyone at CC a college consultant?
I know it sounds silly but college consulting cost so much
and since my family's somewhat financially challenged...
I can't afford like $600 for a single visit....

Is anyone at CC like a professional or at least experienced
consultant?

I understand a college consultant wouldn't hang around in
forums when they can easily make couple thousand dollars
consulting kids, but still...

OR an adcom?? lol..

I never had a private counselor and got through the college process just fine. Personally, I think it's a waste of money (two of my friends spent $7000 a year on one, and neither got into the first choice college or a couple of the other colleges their counselor recommended).

If you have any questions, you can always:
1.) Ask the parents and kids who have gone already gone through the process.
2.) Do research yourself on the internet.
3.) Ask the counselor at your school.

thanks!

what do college consultants tell students tho?
good tips?

what's low income... how much?
just out of curiosity

Well, as I have never had a consultant, I don't know much, but my friend did tell me about some of his sessions. He has had the consultant all four years of high school. During the first year, the consultant recommended him what kind of extracurriculars to do and what kind of course schedule to have, based on his strengths. Later on, the counselor evaluated his grades and performance in his ECs, and made a list of colleges he should apply to. He also guided him in filling out the applications and writing the essays.

The only school he got into was his safety. My other friend, while he didn't get into his first choice, did get into quite a few other colleges. He never talked about his sessions, but I'm pretty sure it was the same thing.

Actually, there's several on here. SoozieVT is one, I think, and Carolyn is training to be one. There's several adcoms- AdmissionsDaniel (JHU), benjones (MIT), etc. I don't think they do free consulting, though. :p

i mean like just asking a few questions to clarify
different clashing opinions on CC

Also can anyone answer my question about low income thing?

Ben Golub on the Caltech forum is very helpful.

What's your question?

nvm CCers can answer my questions better and are more helpful!

How hard is it to get into Caltech??

I didn't get a good score on the PSAT (210)
and I got a letter from Caltech

does getting letter from colleges mean anything?

Almost everyone gets the same letters. It's because you signed up for the Student Search Service, which is a fancy way of saying you gave them your address and email address so they can bombard you with all their advertising. I have a poster from Caltech and still get emails every other week or so.
