Is anyone choosing SCU over a more prestigious college?

Invisible ink!

:(I am too impatient.

I personally thing SCU is a great school. We're still waiting for decisoins from several of son's schools & waiting to hear about possible merit awards from several schools as well. Will also need to talk with each school about how they deal with health-related class absences to see which schools best meet son's needs. Only after we sort thru all of these issues will we be able to talk about which school will be best for son. Personally, I think SCU has considerable prestige & is a nice small size.

BTW, I think I read one of your posts in which you described their existing a sizeable Hawaiian group (for lack of better term) that expresses their interest for Santa Clara University. My question is - why is there such a trend? With what institutions do you align SCU's reputation?

Yes, a friend's son & about 5 or 6 of his friends (all from the same private HS) all got into SCU & are all thinking of attending. My son's private HS also often sends quite a number of students to SCU every year. I think they apply for the same reasons my son & his friend do -- it's a beautiful school in a great location with great academics. It is also nice that they give some nice merit awards & have a highly regarded engineering department. My son is interested in engineering, as are many folks at his HS. I think they also like that it's a smaller, more nurturing environment than a bigger state U. Are these reasons you applied & find SCU attractive as well?

Please answer my second question. I would appreciate it.

I'm really not sure what you're asking. The FISKE Guide to Colleges 2006 edition mentions as overlaps with SCU the following: UCDavis, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB & UCBerkeley. I'm not quite sure I agree with them as overlaps since they're all MUCH larger & state schools that are impacted & students often take longer than 4 years to graduate. They're also all publics as opposed to SCU which is a Jesuit school that requires 3 courses in religion.
Maybe it's more like Loyola Marymount (in LA) or Occidental or USF or UPuget Sound in terms of size and some religous influence & relative "rank" & smaller classes? I find it really hard to compare schools because I'm not all that familiar with that many of them or their "rank."
It can also depend on the particular department you're thinking of. For the most part, we've been considering engineering & SCU's school is well regarded.

Your answer will suffice.

What prompted my query was a statement from an associate of mine that proclaimed there existing a rivalry between Santa Clara University and Gonzaga in regards to sports. I was searching for an answer that might assert something similar.

At any rate, thanks for your responses.

Many of the UC's are also highly regarded for engineering. My feeling on UC's over privates is that budget cuts and population increases on campus without the added student services to cover the increased studnet population are eroding the qualty of education offered at UC's. I know this is going on at UCSC. They are adding on to the campus to increase the number of students they can take without increasing class numbers, and services. Trying to compare private schools to state schools is not an easy comparison to make. By going to a highly rated state school, easy name recognition all over the US, do you gain something over a private like SCU. SCU has a great regional reputation. But do you plan to live on the east coats or midwest where name recognition might be helpful? What level of education do you need, different from thinking you must always have the best of the best, and what is superior enough. If one had to have the very best we would be talking about an east coast Ivy. UCLA isn't in that league.

Yes... and I have family and relatives in the area.

You bring up several good points SKM with answers that I'm already aware of and so I'll refrain from answering.

i'm trying to decide betwen SCU (honors program + half tuition schlorship) and carnegie mellon....what do you think?

im trying to decide btwn scu (honors and half tuition) lehigh and wake forest... im going out to look at scu in a few days but i have no idea what to do.

what is the student body like at scu?

I might choose SCU over the Naval Academy.

The student body has a lot of preppy white kids from affluent families, and a good number of Asian, Latino, Filipino catholics of middle class backgrounds. All really nice people, intelligent and community oriented.

My college guidebook says SCU "is more like UC Santa Barbara than UC Santa Cruz" i.e. more Socal preppy than Norcal bohemian.

PPl say the girls/women are really fine, I can't confirm that. It's definitely not the dumb blonde party school that it used to be though.

Is the engineering program really good? I mean is it highly nationally ranked like a UC?

One of the pluses of SCU is its location, in close proximity to a lot of tech & engineering placements. I understand interships and job placements are pretty good at SCU, but you should get more info from their offices about the % of students placed & where they are placed.

My S was interested in SCU & we had been seriously considering them but instead chose USC because they were more willing to accommodate his health issues. He's been very happy there but we expected that he would also have enjoyed SCU.

I chose SCU (full tuition + honors + ACE) over claremont, mostly because of financial reasons.

but, scu is still an awesome schoool and I'm excited to go in the fall =)

GO hawaii!

I had a very difficult time deciding between Santa Clara and UC Irvine. In the end I chose UC Irvine because I figure, SCU is well know in the silicon valley but what if I'm trying to have a career internationally or in another area. I also chose Irvine because of the research opportunities, and the highly ranked engineering program. I think SCU is a great school but I think that you should consider tuition costs and where you see yourself afterwords.

I've posted about Santa Clara did recently, and so did someone else.

Can we get a buzz going?
