Is anyone else considering Dentistry?

Can someone give me some extra information about dental school. I know its 4 years long but what else? Difficulty wise? Compared to Medical school

Im considering going pre-dental. Seems liek a great option. Dental school is hard like med school. Getting into dental school is SLIGhtly easier than med but not by much.

its slightly easier to get in, but according to my cousin dental school is harder than medical school for the first two years significantly (in the first 2 years of dental school they cover everything done in medical all the anatomy etc classes PLUS all mouth/dental classes)

"Dentists have the highest suicide rate" is what everyone says when I mention dental school.

"Dentists have the highest suicide rate" is what everyone says when I mention dental school.

Also said in "The Whole Nine Yards" ...

But it is fairly true.

um...they make a TON of money though

"money doesn't bring happiness." You realize this is true when you are older. You reach a point where money will buy you things you want, but you won't value that more then other things. Having lots of money doesn't mean crap if life sucks.

my dad is an Oral Surgeon, this is my opinion though....

Oral surgeon is different from a normal dentist whose work is usually not as extensive. Dentists in general like doctors lose their drive to do the line of work after some time. Job satisfaction for docs and dentists drops off quick.

I've been a general dentist for 25 years and I enjoy it now more than ever. Be happy to answer questions.

What was dental school like and why did you choose dentistry over medicine or any other health profession?

my dad went to Columbia Dental School

Dental school was miserable. In many schools med & dent students take clases together for the first two years. In addition, your hands need to be trained and there's pre-clinical couses (doing labwork and dentistry on mannikens). So there's close to 40 hours of class, plus studying and projects due. Instructors were not kind, but perhaps it's better now. I kind of viewed it as a fraternity hazing. If I wanted to join the profession, I obviously had to go through it.

I never wanted to be an MD, didn't want to deal with seriously ill people, don't enjoy being in hospitals, the long hours, etc. I love working with my hands and enjoyed science & math. I also love being the master of my own destiny and owning my own business. I practice the way I see fit and incorporate new technology & techniques as I wish. I employ team members I enjoy being around and I appreciate the patients who choose to see me. Insurance is not a major factor for me, I have geared my practice for mostly elective procedures. I truly cannot imagine doing anything else (except maybe being a rock star, but that's not happening!).

ru a cosmetic dentist?

There's no cosmetic dentistry specialty. I do general, reconstructive and cosmetic.
