Is there anyone else here on CC that is considering Kalamazoo? I just got my acceptance in the mail today, and I would love to hear anything anyone has to say about the college. Did anyone else apply, or even consider applying?

I'm a junior, and I've been considering applying to Kalamazoo. I can't tell you anything about it you don't already know, but there are others of us out here!

FINALLY...Some K-Zoo'ers!!!!!

Son was just accepted EAII yesterday as well and is totally fired up. He was recruited for football, but also met their admissions standards. Merit aid offers will be mailed within the next two weeks. It is an EXCELLENT school...one of the best in Michigan...if not THE best for undergrad (and that's coming from a U-Michigan--Ann Arbor grad!). We did a full-day visit...the campus is really pretty in a very nice neighborhood (has a New England feel), there's a big state U located directly next door so there's lots of student activity and additional social opportunites, and the mid-sized town of Kalamazoo is also very nice (pop. 225,000). The K-Plan offers amazing opportunities...almost every student does study-abroad, career internships, etc. and their academic programs are top-notch. The new library just opened...gorgeous...and other renewal projects have been approved and will begin soon. Everyone we met and spoke with was bright, articulate, friendly. It is a special place...you all should seriously consider attending.

That's good to hear. I live in New England where people mostly just think I'm confusing some other college's name with a kazoo and start correcting me, so I'm glad my impression is being borne out.

Anti and Shadow--Since you're both from out-of-state, how did you learn about Kalamazoo? Some great LAC's like K College don't get discussed much on the CC boards. Have you visited or will you soon?

My dad's from Ohio (he's a Buckeye-sorry!) and I've been working, a bit, off his list of "places I wish I went instead of Ohio State," just because he's got all these great schools from the Midwest that no one in Boston's ever going to mention. I'm sort of in love with what I've heard of it.

I know a lot of people hear of it from that Loren Pope "Colleges That Change Lives" book though...?

I haven't visited yet, but I'm planning to soon--Dad and I are going to make a "college sweep" around the region next time we're out visiting the grandparents.

Anticatalyst: Kalamazoo did not have the strength in the Japanese language that my D wanted to studt, otherwise it would have been on her list. Seems like an excellent school. Your Dad;s idea of a 'college sweep' parallels just what my D and I did after her sophomore year. We visited Grinnell, Coe, Cornell, Knox, Earlham, Kenyon, Ohio Wesleyan, Wooster and Hiram. Some she liked or disliked on the spot.

In her Junior summer, we visited Beloit, Illinois Wesleyan, and revisited Earlham and Kenyon. All four of these colleges she has applied for admittance.

Good luck on your search, my D enjoyed looking as we did it slow and took time to visit family and other activities during the trip.

anticatalyst--No need to apologize for Dad's Buckeye alum status. I'm not one of those crazed Wolverines obsessed with the rival schools like so many of my fellow alums.

We also did the Midwest college sweep, including a few of the schools in Loren Pope's book in addition to Kalamazoo. Curious...What are some of the places on your Dad's wish list?

Hi
I also applied to Kzoo (EA) and was accepted with a decent amount of merit money. unfortunately i haven't visited yet. and i'm of course waiting to hear from my other schools before i make a decision. but i like everything i hear about kalamazoo. quality academics, students seem to really enjoy the classes and are hard workers. plus, im under the impression graduate schools really look favorably at kalamazoo. one thing i'm unsure/nervous about is that most people come from michigan/surrounding states. i live overseas so i don't know how that adjustment would be...any thoughts??

i'd love to hear more about kalamazoo - keep posting!

Calz88--Everything you've heard is accurate...high quality academics with an intelligent, motivated, and ambitious student body, excellent preparation for graduate school and a high rate of admittance. Our student tour guides where both from out-of-state and loved the college. One was a sophomore and was so excited as he was telling us all about his study-abroad plans for next year to Perth, Australia. As part of the K-Plan, virtually everyone studies overseas for a term or two. That's one of the things that attracts students to the school. We found the students we spoke to had an adventurous and independent spirit so I'm sure an international like yourself would feel very comfortable there. Students had chosen the school for its programs, including a strong internship/externship placement network, not necessarily because it was close to home.

Congrats on your S's acceptance GBAMom! A friend of mine is going there next year, he's definitely looking forward to the non-teaching assistants giving him his education freshman and sophomore years. K-Zoo is probably the best or 2nd best school in Michigan. Was consideringn applying even though they don't have any of my majors, because of the environment it has.

Hey, thanks a lot, Wolves. Yeah, as it turned out, son was recruited for football which I presume helped with the merit award just received today...$36,000 or $9,000/year...not bad!! He's had both his official visit and his overnight/class visit. He really likes the campus, the kids, the coaches, the town, the K-plan components of the curriculum and, of course, Western's big party scene directly next door...LOL !!! He's looking at one of the popular majors there...Economics/Business. Figures he's grad school bound at some point anyway, as are most of the K-College kids. My son should trade AIM SN's with your friend and compare notes.
