I plan to apply to Brown. I know that they require the new SAT, but I called up the admissions office and was informed that so long as I include a cover letter with my application explaining why I was unable to take it, it won’t be held against me. I already took the old SAT and am satisfied enough with my score (old SAT + writing SAT II: 2300) but I won’t be able to take the new one. Is anyone else on a similar boat? I did take the ACT with writing, but my scores weren’t nearly as good and I don’t think I want to submit them. Thanks.

brown requires the new SAT, they will not even consider scores from the old one.

I was told by an admissions officer that my scores would be considered if I sent a cover letter explaining why I could not take the new one. Did someone else hear something different directly from an admissions officer?

they'll probably take it then.

i would play it safe and take the new one though.

don't worry, from what I hear, its alot easier to get high scores on the new one than old+writing

Yeah, but I realllllly doubt I'll be able to. I'm not currently in school (home schooled) and I've been in and out of the country for a while now, and I'm leaving again for a few months.

Umm...I DID take the ACT with writing, but my scores aren't very strong (30) so I'm hesitant to send it. :-/

what was your writing score on the ACT, and how does it compare to your SAT2's

790 SAT II writing. My ACT writing was 34. I got a 35 English and 31 math. I can't remember what exactly my science and reading were, but they were loooooooow. I'm strong in science and reading but I thought the ACT had a really unforgiving time limit and I am a painfully slow test-taker. I think they were like 29 and 26? Something around there.

is this true that Brown won't take the old SAT? my score dropped 130 points when I took the new one, but with the old M + V and the new W it is "acceptable"

if you take the new one, they will still use the old SAT to create the highest cumulative score. so just do well on the writing section.

btw, Gavroche, you can take the SAT overseas.
