im pretty sure i am.

Where do I sign up for visits?

I am! It should be great...in a cornfield.

so where are you from, jespere? is grinnell one of your top choices?

I'm from southcentral MN. So the "Welcome to Iowa" sign is about 10 miles away. You andrea?

Grinnell looks to be a really good school with good finaid, good laid back, let's-learn! feel. Plus Warren Buffet is like on the board of trustees or something. Carleton and I didn't jive too well because there was something missing, so I'm hoping that Grinnell will fill that out for me. Its an all around good school.

Like any LAC I am rather scared of
A. job placement.
B. Oh man, another four years talking about the weather and seeing corn harvested?

What about you?

What other schools are you looking at?

yeah, i am a little fearful of the rural area thing also. i am from suburban washington, about a half hour away from seattle. i am also planning on visiting kenyon. but if something happens and i dont like either kenyon or grinnell, i will probably end up at the university of washington or whitman. ive kind of been looking at some east coast schools, but they all seem a little too preppy. plus, they are sooo far away from washington. hopefully i will fall in love with grinnell. and then get accepted, of course, haha.

Sweet, washington! Have you ever experienced midwest winters? I live in a town of 10K so small town living is nothing new.

Yeah, I really want to go to an east coast school but then I go to class and remember how much I dislike that general preppy atmosphere. I think thats what is keeping me away from schools like Bates.

Acceptance rates...ugh. Hopefully being asian isn't a big hinderance in Iowa. >_<.

My son picked Grinnell over 9 other great schools from all over the country. We're from the Northeast. There are great schools out here too, but he loved the unpretentious, friendly Midwest attitude. Also looked in Mid-Atlanic states, the Pacific NW and CA. The cornfields don't scare him--the Grinnell campus is bursting with activities.

My rule of thumb on Grinnell:

Go there young (wo)man, go there.

In less than a moment, you will have all questions answered about your interests in attending. There is no middle ground. I have always known this about this school which Loren Pope adeptly coined as one of those LAC's which are selected as opposed to selective (more true when Pope's first CTCL book was published.).

haha, definitely not. the most snow i have ever seen in my life is like three inches. and all hell breaks loose in my city at the slightest snow or ice, my school has literally closed before because of frost.

my city probably has about 40,000 people. so its not huge, but not super small. but i dont think i will mind the rural small town thing too much.

i think it might help, i dont think asians are overrepresented at grinnell.

yeah, i have heard that there is a lot to do on campus, and that most of it is free. and ive heard that there are grocery stores and a walmart and stuff like that in grinnell, so thats really all that i need. just wondering, did your son bring a car?

haha, i probably will. its my first choice right now. hopefully i will be accepted, and get enough aid. grinnell is supposedly good with aid, though. hopefully that works out for me.

bethievt, did your son bring a car?

No dear, he did not want a car there. You don't need one either. He LOVES the freedom of a small campus and town he can walk around. There are so many activities, he can't begin to do them all. He is having the best time!

I'm editing--the activities are mostly on campus not in the town. But they are mostly also free to students.

thanks. i was just wondering.

I'm going to Grinnell on the 12th as well. I'm from Cedar Rapids, IA, which is only about 1.5hrs away.

oh, unfortunately my plans changed.....i have a test that day, so i will have to go in november. but have fun, and post a visit report when you get back.

A few friends of mine are hosting a sub-free prospie party that weekend. Unless someone decides to crash the party with alcohol... We're planning to have DDR, video games, and a dance party. We're going to let people request songs too :)

My son is still VERY happy at Grinnell. A great fit for him, academically and socially.
