The competitiveness of India's IIT has been the subject of much debate. Is there anyone here who has attended the school or is familiar with it.

Specifically, does anyone know if IIT accepts foreigners and, if so, how many foreigners (especially Americans) are at the school? Also, what is the typical acceptance criteria? Are EC's, legacies, and minority status considered?

Admissions to all of the 7 IIT's are decided only by the JEE - Joint Entrance Exam. There's a screening test and a final exam. Highest scorers get in.

Earlier, they used to have a program called DASA (Direct Admission to Students abroad) provided they have 1800+ SAT II scores (combined of 3) and 80% or above in senior year. But now they have cancelled as those students could not cope up.

ha, your major is decided by your rank :p well if your rank is good chances are you'll be able to get the major of your choice but not otherwise

Of the nearly 1.5 Lac aspirants appear in the Screening test, about 22000 are screened through to the next stage for the Mains. Finally about 4200 students get their ranks. Once students get their ranks, they are called for a counseling session, where the students (depending on the rank obtained) get the campus and major of their choice.

Gutrade: I can now know understand why you were rejected by Stanford EA. You deserve it, without a doubt, if that's the racism you have in your heart. Thankfully, students at Stanford will not have to face your racism when they go to school there next year.

Do you mean more than 50 write the exam for each spot?
I don't really see how you can compare that way... it's kind of like saying anyone that writes the SAT applied to H/Y/P. With the SAT you normally know what range of schools to apply to... if you have a 1000 SAT you wouldn't bother applying to any top schools whereas for IIT you don't know the results of the entrance exam until you write it.
If H/Y/P and similar top schools in the US based admissions solely on one exam then they'd no doubt get a huge number of people writing those exams... even those who did extremely poorly in high school.

It would seem like a waste of time, but IIT is the only way to come to the US and get a job. Don't other students in our country apply to the Ivies with stats that aren't good enough for the Ivies at all?

The point is here that these students in India are dreaming to come to the US, and they still want to see if they can get into IIT. IIT is practically the only way most Indians in 1990s got to the US.

Medi, That may be true but HYP do not get a lot of low end apps. Their problem is that they get to many qualified apps. But if IIT does not have an app fee and there is no exam fee, I can understand what your saying. If not though, given the odds we are seeing, for lower end performers it would be like throwing away your money.
I also question your statement that they all want to go to IIT so that they can eventually come to the U.S. I really don't think we have thousands upon thousands of them here.

Mediterranean, where are you getting that from? That is entirely untrue.

IIT isn't the only way to come to the US for a job, I assure you. There are many other very good schools in India that provide the same oppurtunity. My parents came here in the 90's, did not attend IIT and are doing better off than some IIT grads.
