Is anyone familiar with Phi Beta Kappa?

Is anyone familiar with this honor society and is it legitimate? Also, someone else I know who is a BBA at Ross also said they got it. Is that even possible?

Yeah it’s known as being pretty much the only honor society that’s actually prestigious. Yes you can get PBK in ross.

Congrats on being invited to join PBK. That is an achievement you should be very proud of.

I was granted admission to Phi Beta Kappa from LSA in 1977. It’s totally based on academic performance and is by invitation only; you don’t apply. I don’t think things have changed. It’s noted on your diploma as well and, as @hotdogseller indicated, there is a modicum of prestige associated with it. You get a gold “key” pin, and those in the know recognize it when you wear it, although I haven’t worn mine in years. Now you’ve got me wondering where I put it…

i see thanks for the info guys.

When does a student find out they’ve been invited? What time of the college year? For undergrads, is it close to graduation time?

Induction ceremony was in April of senior year. I don’t exactly remember when notification was, but it was earlier that semester.

What’s the typical GPA cutoff?

Above 3.8, not sure if there’s data on specifics.

There is data somewhere but I’ve forgotten where I saw it. It’s based on percentile, and I think the cutoffs at Umich have been extremely high - something like >3.95 junior year, >3.9 senior year. Could be higher than that even.

the official letter i got was dated feb 23.

Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest honor society; only about 10 percent of the nation’s institutions of higher learning have Phi Beta Kappa chapters. http://pbk.org will answer all your questions about the society. I don’t know Michigan’s current criteria, but you may be able to find it by searching the site. Certainly, your college department will be able to fill you in. If you’ve received a letter of admission, I’m thinking there should be some contact info on the letter that you could query. I graduated with a 3.9 several decades ago (GPAs did not exceed 4.0 in those days).
