Is anyone going on the "TAP into CAL" trip?

Is anyone from SOCAL in the Berkeley Transfer Alliance Project and going on the "TAP into CAL" trip this thursday?

There is a TAP for berkeley?!

Actually Yea! But it is diffrent from the UCLA TAP program. The TAP for Berkeley is for high achieving low to moderate income students, underrepresented students and first generation college students. But being qualified for just one of these might not get you in the program. I myself am a low income first generation college student (You need to show verification such as a tax statement). You must fill out an application and be accepted to the program. There are only a select few SOCAL Community Colleges that were selected to participate but there are quite a few in NORCAL. You must also have a decent GPA even though the program only requires a 3.0 GPA you need to have upwards of 3.55+ at least from what I have heard. It also helps if you demonstrate leadership and are in your schools honor program. The TAP does not provide priority admission but offers one on one counseling/application help from university represenitives and also provides research oppertunities over summer at Berkeley. Students in the program also yeild a higher rate acceptance. This program is not very well known and very difficult to find information on I learned about it through my schools honor program. If you try to find information on the internet you will only find a small amount of information. The program is fairly new and was founded on a one million dollar donation from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation to help students that might otherwise not attend such universities. And what I mean by such universities the foundation also started outreach programs at (I believe) USC, Notre Dame, UNC Chapel Hill, and Cornell. More information can be found on the foundations web site. The only real downside is like I said before its only for stuedents that qualify and only at a very few Community Colleges. But its a good program that helps students to prepare for UC Berkeley.

wow! I didn't knowthat there was a such thing as that. I don't think my CC offers UC Berkeley TAP.. I am a independent student haven't pay the tax. Am I eligible for the TAP? What community college you go to?

If your from Torrance El Camino is one of the participants I do not no if Harbor is though. If you go to El Camino talk to the honors program cordinator Joe Holiday about how to get in the TAP with Berkeley. You might have to be in the honors program and also be a high achieving first generation/low income/underrepresented student to actually get in the TAP program I really do not know who qualifies or who dosent Mr. Holiday might though. And the TAP program is very small and I do not know how many students they select. Do you go to Harbor or El Camino?

EL Camino..... I am in TAP program but i don't think i will be done w/ the program though...

hey torrance, are u still a sociology major? are u going to go to ucla or berk?

mojo- im going for Cal but going to apply both. I am going to take evidence class at another CC. wat about ur self?

im going to ucla lol

mojo- How come? your going this fall? what was your main reason to choose LA?

well, i put lots of thought into it. And i mean, LOTS.

In the end, it came down to size and location. Berkeley is a gorgeous campus, but being 1,000 acres is a bit intimidating and the fact that the dorms were not on-campus (all of them are really off-campus) was a real turn off. To me, at least from the vibe i got, Berkeley seems like NYU, in the sense that its pretty much survival of the fittest.

However, at ucla, the campus is smaller and seems more intimate (450 acres). Walking around campus is much easier; the dorms are really on-campus. Also, Berkeley seems to put more emphasis on graduate studies, while ucla is attempting to improve undergrad by adding the honors program (smaller class sizes), adding more dorms on-campus (in order to make the campus residential), and hiring more teachers.

Berkeley seems like a fantastic place, but really, its only for graduate studies. The only thing i hate about ucla is the quarter system. But either way, both are fantastic schools. In the end, an education is an education no matter where you go =)

Also, ucla was 1,000 dollars cheaper.

Torrancecali did you get accepted to Berkeley as a sociology major? if so what was your gpa?

mojo- wow! It seems like you made a great decision! Good luck @ UCLA! Hopefully, I will c u at LA! what happen to your econ major thing?

Thedude- I am going to apply as sociology major for fall 08! currrently my GPA is 3.708.

Um, well, i decided to continue my major with Sociology, and i am going to minor in labor studies, which is what i would have majored in @ cornell university. So i get the best of both worlds, if you know what i mean ;)

What happened to you and Cal? i thought you were 100% going there..

TAP is not a guarantee, but it basically is (helps A LOT)

and hold your horses, you kinda have to be chosen for it. you dont just get let into it for being persistent (oh how i wish it were that easy haha)

I dont even know how much it helps the tap for berkeley dosent even say that it provides prority admission. The program basically provides one on one counseling/application help from a berkeley representative and research oppertunities at UCB. When we had a Berkeley representative come to our CC she reviewed our transcripts and asked if I would like to join the TAP program.

mojo- U never know! I might change my mind like u... who knows I might get rejected from Cal..

Thedude44- I guess no one is going to the "TAP into Cal" trip lol!

Haha yea it is a small group but I thought I would give it a shot.
