I really love both, and I’m not sure what to do. There are so many cool things to do in Berkeley, but the students seem friendlier and more down to earth at Davis (am I right on this?).

I definatly think Davis students are more down to earth (i.e. normal) than Cal students. Berkeley has it's own unique culture & atmosphere that I'm not too fond of. Everyone I know that went there turned into a vegan political activist.

I'm totally in your boat, soccersarah017... but I think I'm really leaning towards Davis at this point, for reasons related to the one you mentioned.

im in your guys boat as well, right now im leaning towards davis

Before, I thought I had a snow ball's chance in hell of getting into Berkeley and was almost dead set on making my way on over to Davis. Now, however, that I've been admitted to Cal I'm almost certain I'll be attending. However, I can't get over the fact that i still really love davis. It's hard to let it go.

The envirnoment there seems so much warmer, friendlier and down to earth than Berkeley's. Also, peopel seem way more chill, and friendly. OH yeah, and the town and surrounding area is really safe and cute. Berkeley on the othe hand gives off somewhat of a cold vibe, the surrounding area isn't the best and the people seem really asian and really overachieving lol (not that either of those is bad...). Still, there's so much stuff i love about berkeley too, too much to name. I've wanted to go there since I was a freshman in high school. And now matter what school i end up choosing, I'll likely end up a crazy, vegan liberal no matter what!

I got into Berkeley, but I went to Davis.. don't regret it for a minute. I still don't like the vibe I feel when in Berkeley. Don't go there just because it's more famous. I have a friend from H.S. that got into Stanford and Berkeley and still chose Davis. You want to enjoy your education, not wake up everyday hating your exsistance, so pick a school you'd feel comfortable in for the next 4-5 years.

Yeah, well I'll be visiting some UC's during spring break. After then I am deciding. I hope that I will like Berk better just b/c it has been my "dream school" for a long time. If I like Davis better, it is going to be hard to let go of that, you know? Oh well, we'll see what happens! Good luck to everybody!

wow, why is everyone deciding between cal and ucd? i know a lot of people with the same problem as you. if you got what it takes and cal wants you then i think you should go for it.

Well, it's not just about elite academics. I want to be comfortable and happy... Berkeley's environment isn't for everyone.

haha yeah, i saw that coming. i guess it's all up to that visit during spring break then.

Yea... I'm trying to decide between Berkeley and Davis right now as well. Leaning towards Cal, but I'll leave the final decision to when I visit both of them during spring break.

please keep us informed after the spring break visits, i will visit too

i'm so surprised there are so many people who feel the same as I! ever since i found out i got into berkeley, my mom has been putting extreme pressure on me. you know, the "berkeley is so prestigious! it will make me proud" argument. but in my heart, i really want to go to davis. ive visited many times before because my sister attended davis, so i know what it's like and what to expect. and i like it.

but i feel really bad for disappointing my mom. in the end, though, its my life and i don't want to spend everyday at berkeley hating my life, and my family.

of course, i'm compromising right now. i'm going to tour both campuses this month to see what it's really like.

That doesn't sound like a compromise, it sounds like an excellent idea. You will have a much better idea of where you want to spend your college years after you have toured. Perhaps your mom will be convinced as well.

if u wanna get the best education go berkeley, if you want to have more fun and mroe relaxed go davis

LOL. It's not that simple. Davis is challenging and has highly reputable academics - no, not crazy prestigious academics, but it's not Chico State. Education is holistic; if you're happier and more comfortable you're going to be more enthusiastic about your learning and have a better educational experience.

I read somewhere on this board that the quality of undergrad education is the same for all uc's. The only thing that makes a uc more "prestigious" is the grad programs.

take into account your major and your personal work ethic. if you're not willing to work at UCB, then you'll likely fail. however, there is plenty of pressure there to work hard, which in my eyes is a good thing.

For all of you who discount the level of difficulty at UCD, my sister went to UCD undergrad. Her major was psycho-biology. She then went on to CAL for medical school. (eye doctor) She finished 2nd in her class. The person who finished first was also a UCD grad. Most in the class went to CAL for undergrad.

Tough choice, I really sympathize with you. Honestly, had I the option,I would have probably pushed my own child to CAL. It is hard to turn down the #1 public school in the nation. Just think of the opportunites to meet some of the great scholars of the world?

However, she LOVES Davis ( her roommate also chose Davis over CAL due to her major). And, her friends at UCLA and UCSD both say now that they prefer Davis. I think partially because there is a very unified feel to it, despite its size. Lots of Aggie-pride, I guess.

I wish you the best of luck. Definitely check out the specific major. For certain majors it does not make much of a difference. Davis is not CAL, but it is still a nationally-ranked university, well-respected with a very solid academic reputation.
