Is anyone in "Visionaries" exploration floor in Goddard?

I'm very interested in applying for the Visionaries exploration floor, but it seems like it's a relatively new program and therefore there isn't alot of information about it on the board here.

Is anyone in this form living on this floor right now? or are there anyone who knows well about this floor?

How's this floor in terms of social aspects and activities? (I heard that goddard floors really bond strongly, does this one do the same as well?)

Any inputs will be appreciated. Thank you.

Also.. is Weinstein as bad as it seems? People seem like they hate on Weinstein, but I don't really see why.. it's supposedly social and all, no?

I'm in Goddard, although not Visionaries, but I'll give you a little info. In Goddard, the different themes are designated to one floor, it mixes people up. You have one RA for your floor and then there is an RA (who could be different) and a falculty affiliate for your Stream (visionaries, global NY, povert & affluence, writing, all the world's a stage...). I like this way of doing it, because you meet people on your floor with DIFFERENT interests. What was it that attracted you to visionaries? The RA associated with that stream is my RA for my floor, and in all honestly that stream doesn't do anything. I am in global ny and it's honestly the best stream as we have a falculty affiliate who's reallly interested and involved. Other streams that have good falculty are Writing NY and All the World's a Stage. However, take this with a grain of salt, because my RA is graduating this year and it may be very different next year. I DO recommend Goddard- we have smaller floors and the quality of the dorms are very nice. For example, our bathrooms are a lot better than what you'll see in Hayden for example.

BTW- forgot to add, in case you don't know, Goddard is now the Residential Collee. So you have the opportunity to take Writin the Essay with poeple in the dorm and there are community service requirements (15 hrs per semester). If you successfullly complete the requirements, you can live in Broome Street next year (an upperclass dorm, in SoHo), which is the continuation of the residential college for upperclassmen, you can also avoid doin the lottery.

The visionaries stream does nothing? Is that true? I heard that they hold various activities promoting leadership and such... Is anyone actually affiliated with that stream? Or can you elaborate a little bit about the "inactive" nature of visionaries stream, mememe245?

Also, I have one question about global NY. Isn't that floor mainly filled up with international students? If it is too heavily populated with int'l students.. I'd probably want to avoid such floor...

Again, the floor you live on isn't necessarily the people in the stream. You are assigned a floor AND a stream.

As a member of the ResCollege/Goddard, I have seen ZERO activities sponsored by Visionaries and my RA has expressed frustration with the faculty affiliate who is not committed to the program.

I forgot to mention, but the Politics Stream is also quite active. Global NY is really one of the most active streams, and NO it is not heavily populated with int'l students. I was concerned about this, but there are maybe 5-8 int'l students out of 40 or so. Many of the current GlobalNY students are people interested in IR, politics, Stern students, and just people who like the programs it offers.

Huh? Wasn't it like that all the people in the same stream are assigned to the same floor? I saw previous posts where all the Writing NY people live on the 3rd floor, Visionaries 6, and so on.. was it changed recently?

No, that system changed when Goddard became the Residential College. Now, all the streams are mixed up onto various different floors. Goddard is no longer explorations, it's under the name of "Res College"

interesting... hmmmm now hearing all the bad stuffs on visionaries and good stuffs on Global NY, my interest is shifted.

well can you elaborate on those activities that Global NY hosts? and.. are there alot of Stern students in Goddard and specifically for Global NY stream?

... Weinstein, U-Hall, Hayden, Goddard.... each claims itself to be the best and others to be worse.. (especially Goddard and Weinstein seem to be hated by others.. haha)

Choosing a right frosh dorm... this is a real pain in the ass.

Yeah, honestly a lot of the people in Goddard are like "over achievers" so there are many Stern kids as well. There are several stern scholars, presidential scholars, mlk scholars, gates scholars, cas scholars etc.
So far Global NY has sponsored:
trip to queens museum of art
UN trip
trips to various off broadway shows
trip to persepolis
discussions
movie showings (blood diamond... etc)

Let me know if you have any other questions...

Looking at the list of activities you guys have done, Global NY sounds very attractive! I might fill out my housing application tmr and put it as my first choice as well.. haha.

mememe245, did you apply for Global NY yourself? or were u assigned to it? I heard some people just randomly get assigned to Goddard explorations.. hmm

And as far as volunteer activities go, what kind of volunteer activities are you engaged in? Do you have some selections to choose from?.. Do you work only with the people in your stream, or residential college as a whole?

Goddard seems like a very interesting place to go! :)

I put Global NY as my first choice, but yes there are a couple people who were randomly assigned to ResCollege.

There are several projects you can do with the ResCollege (sponsored by hall council), but mostly I do my projects through the office of community service. NYU > Office of Community Service

Keep in mind, you have the option of taking the required Writing the Essay course with the faculty affiliated associated with your stream. You take it in the second floor classroom.

Oh yah.. the writing the essay option.. I was told about it a few times, but I wasn't really sure about it..

Aren't there only two streams that you take yout WTE classes with your streammates? (Writing NY and All the World's a Stage)

Or is it that those two streams are "required" to take WTE class together and other streams have an option to take WTE with streammates?

Hmmm.. Also... are those specially designed WTE classes tend to be easier than regular ones? haha.. at least in terms of grading..

3 streams- WritingNY, ATWAS, and GlobalNY

Even, if you're in that stream, you don't have to take WTE with the stream. I'm in Global NY and I'm just taking a WTE class NOT affiliated with Goddard.

I don't know if they're all easier, but the teacher for Global is pretty tough, so if you decide to do GLobal, i'd suggest opting out of WTE w/in Goddard.

Mmm.. somebody told me that when he signed up for the WTE course for the first semester, he was automatically placed in a Goddard class..

is there some kind of major trouble that you have to go through in order to take WTE class in the first semester outside of the Goddard class?

Honestly I'm not sure. I ended up going to orientation #1, so I didn't already know I would be in Goddard when I made my schedule. In all honesty, WTE sucks where ever and whomever you take it. It's not the biggest deal.

Hmmmm... I don't know how this will work.. as much as I want to take Global NY, I'd like to avoid those difficult WTE classes... what does orientation have to do with anything? will I be automatically signed up for GOddard WTE. . .. :(?

I wouldn't let WTE make you lose out on the experience of WTE. WTE sucks no matter what, and teh people I know in the GNY class got A-'s and A's.

RE orientation:
I didn't even know I was accepted into ResCollege at that point. I signed up for classes that did not include WTE. But, if you're in stern you take a full year of Expository writing, and have to take WTE first semester.

I was reading the nyu resed site and it seemed like it is hard to get into Goddard? is this true?
also, I was accepted as an ED student to Stern, am I guaranteed a place at Goddard if I apply?
