Is anyone studying abroad somewhere very unique?

I'd like to hear about any really unusual places people are studying abroad. I know SIT has some interesting programs in places like Mongolia and Samoa.

I have major and strict dietary restrictions (by choice, but still...) so I think that leaves me mainly with choices in urban Europe, but...

There are tons of places I'd like to go abroad, but I doubt any colleges have abroad programs for these places.

Many colleges let you petition, though.

SIT programs are amazing. I will be doing a program in Cochabamba, Bolivia and/or Oaxaca, Mexico with them. That's not TOO exotic but both are social revolutionaries and an interesting place to study since most Americans are too concerned about them being "safe". No where is safe, just perceived as safe.

I heard Bolivia is beautiful.

my son is studying in Jordan. it seems like all he's eating is hummos

I studied abroad in Estonia. Great time.

BTW, good on you OP for looking beyond the oh-so-typical France/Italy/Spain/Germany/UK.

I heard Estonia is amazing, too. I love that whole region. Were you in Tallinn?

I never understood why everyone decides to study in pretty much the same 5 countries, though. There's such a big world out there.

People are too afraid to go outside "safe" countries like the UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Germany, and Australia.

For the record, my friends who went to those countries got mugged at a higher rate than those who went to Latin America and Africa.

S did a summer program in Tibet, mostly outside Lhasa, so he actually got to interact with Tibetans, not Chinese

I went to Israel :) Had the time of my life!

csleslie51 -- what program in Tibet did your son do? My son is also interested in Tibet.

The SIT programs look amazing, but can high schoolers do them? All I could find after a quick browse was that you had to have 1 semester of college-level coursework, which is pretty vague. I'm taking 4 AP's. Does that count?

I believe SIT has a partner program for high schoolers. I think it's EIL...or something...

Thanks!!!!!

A few other interesting programs and locations:

Semester at Sea, goes around the world on a ship!
Scholar Ship, a new program also on a ship
How about Morocco! ISA, Amerispan, SIT, and U of Kansas all go there.
Dominican Republic: a Spanish speaking program in the Caribbean - beautiful! ISA and CIEE go there.
Multi country: East Michigan Cultural History Tour - Europe or Asia...phenomenal programs!

I went to Ghana...one of the most amazing experiences of my life!

I recently got admitteed to a "domestic study abroad" program at NYU. For one semester it costs around $25,000. With a scholarship, I still need to pull out a $15,000 loan. Is that to big of a loan for a semester over there?

Where is your home university?

I wouldn't take out that much money for NYU, but ehhhh.

I go to school in Oklahoma and I'm waiting for aid from FAFSA. I want to go but if it's not right I can always back out.
