Is anyone who get admitted not going to attend?

i really want to know exactly what Duke was looking for this year.

I’m still waiting to hear back from the Ivy League schools, but as of right now, I’m fairly certain that I’m going to decline my offer from Duke.

This thread gives me hope (:

And it’s not like I applied just to see if I can get in. Duke is my absolute dream school (hardcore Duke basketball fan and all). But I just can’t justify paying full tuition when I have a full ride coupled with research and study abroad opportunities at another fine institution. I’m sure others find themselves in similar situations.

In fact, if Duke only admitted those whom they knew were going to attend (hypothetically if they could see into the future) then they would admit only 1700 students and the acceptance rate would be just 6-7%.

I kind of agree. Duke is my dream school too and I got in, but they didn’t give me the greatest aid package, so my parents might make me go to UVA. The Ivies release tomorrow, but I don’t think I’m getting in, and I really want to go to DUKE!

For those of you concerned about FA, make a conscious efort and talk to the financial aid office. They’re very nice and will usually try to see what it can do…

i wish the admissions could have read my mind to see how badly i want to go there!!!

I got a full ride to Duke, and no I didn’t apply on a whim. I truly like the school; however, I’m not going to lie. If I get accepted to Princeton tomorrow, I will most likely not be attending Duke.

Dude college admissions is COMPLETELY random…no joke. I mean, honestly I decided to apply to Duke the DAY BEFORE the app was due. I figured I had a decent essay i had written for Cornell, so why not.

And wow…I can’t believe I got in, when people who had Duke as their dream school were rejected flat out.

Interesting thread … LOL

My son got into UNC, Vanderbilt, Duke, Rice, WUSTL, Carnegie Mellon, GA Tech, RPI, Tulane & UVA (I think these are all … )
and he got rejected at MIT, CalTech & Stanford :frowning:
ans we’re still waiting on Yale & Harvard.

Most, most, most likely he’ll go to GATech (Chem. Eng.), where he got a nice scholarship (we’re living in VA), so y’all can fight over his spot at all the other colleges … good luck!!

I am not sure why I even pressed the submit button on the common app for Duke? But I GOT IN! But wont be attending sadly…aid is not to promising and my parents dont like the idea of me going to the South…even thought I also got into Emory!..I am still waiting on Brown & Yale but will probably go to Notre Dame!

i hate when people apply somewhere where they have no intention of going!!! That spot could have been mine

Maybe there is some way you could make an appeal to the admissions office? Or maybe just show how interested you are by calling and e-mailing to ask questions and stuff. Idk if that will help, but it seems like it will at least get you on their radar and let them know that if you get off the waitlist, you will be on campus in August.

I hope you get in!

No offense, but that’s a really stupid decision on your part IMO. Princeton is not $200,000 better than Duke and neither is HYSM. A full ride to Duke is the best deal available in academia hands down.

It depends where his money is coming from. If it’s merit-based, then maybe. If it’s need-based, he’ll get just as much from Princeton.

It is not my fault I change my mind…I am entitled to do that you know!

Even if I get say 20 grand it wouldn’t be worth it - they would have to offer me 40 grand in grants or more, and I think that’s highly unlikely.

@DREWALL: Your complaint: "i hate when people apply somewhere where they have no intention of going!!! That spot could have been mine " is a little inmature & selfish, I think!

The choice of colleges is a significant decision in a young person’s life, and you don’t want to miss out on opportunities “just because”.
My son applied to quite many colleges, yes, that’s correct - and in the end, he’s going to attend only one school. However, at the time at which he had to decide on his applications, he didn’t know yet in detail what he wanted to major in (Science or Engineering?), so we kept all the options open.

Also, in particular in today’s situation of ridiculously high cost of education, you have to ‘play the game’ of scholarships … with my son’s grades it was possible/likely that he would get some scholarships offered - but definitely not from all the colleges! And since I am not Bill Gates’ little brother, we can’t afford to pay $55+ k per year … . That’s why I find it perfectly ok to apply to multiple schools, fully aware that only one can be attended - and the schools know this too, by the way - that’s why Caltech for example accepts about 600 students for only ~260 places …

Again, your comment is IMO quite childish, but then again, I understand that you’re disappointed - you should just try not to show it in public …

Good luck to you - I’m sure there are many very good schools out there and you’ll find the one that fits best to you.

So, honestly, is there an appeal process for getting into Duke (or any of the bigger betters)? I remember readin an ariticle about some kid that didn;t let up until they let her in. Anybody know?

lesdiablesbleus: Maybe I should have clarified, my money is need-based, so it’s safe to assume that if I do get accepted to Princeton, I’ll get a full ride, or close to one, just like I did for Duke and Stanford.

Omega Sanction: I’m a “she” not a “he.” :)
