From your experience, is AP Chem, AP Lang, and AP USH too much in one year? If so, what would you drop?
What grade are you in?
What classes have you taken before and what grades did you get?
What other classes will you take?
Do you want to take these?
What does your guidance counselor say?
Have you take Honors Chem yet?
That would be doable for a high performing junior year student in our high school. Such a student would likely be taking calculus or pre-calc on top of that too. Check with your guidance counselor, but also ask the teachers of those classes what their expectations are and check with students who have taken the class to ask how they managed the workload.
I know people who have successfully taken these classes concurrently. But nobody here knows your academic aptitudes your school’s degree of difficulty etc. I suggest you work with your teachers and guidance counselor to create a schedule that is challenging yet doable for you.
It’s very person-dependant. A high performing student can certainly handle it, but other students certainly might not be able to. Teachers, parents, and counselors can provide the best advice, as they know a student’s history and capabilities.
Fwiw, my D has those three classes right now (plus Calc BC and a DE humanities class) as a Junior and had 100, 100, and 98 (plus 99 and 98) grades in the first grading period. But she has a history of being a high performing student.
Which one to drop would depend on the remainder of the schedule, how the student is performing in the classes, and the student’s interest.
Also consider what the student can switch to, given that all 3 study areas may be required for graduation. It’s hard to pick up Physics/Bio or World/Euro History at a point that is already 1/4 of the way through the year. An honors/core version of English might be easier, if the topics are similar. Or an honors/core Chem/USH class, if available.
To echo other comments, it depends on the person. How many AP classes have you taken before this? What’s a typical AP courseload at your HS? Have you discussed your courseload with your HS Counselor?
Yes, for certain students. Consider how good the teachers are. Your best bet is to take the classes which have the best teachers.
All three are heavy work load classes, but as others have said, top students can do it. My oldest took AP Bio instead of Chem, but added AP Art History to her load her Junior year. Her extracurriculars were not too demanding. My youngest is only taking APUSH and APEL, but her extracurriculars are very demanding. It just depends on the student and the particular teachers.
Depends on the person AND the school. The best information would come from the guidance counselor, the student (how motivated and organized are they and what else do they do?) It can also vary by teacher. Having one teacher who gives a lot of assignments can weight a student down.
