Is AP English a must?

I am considering my schedule for next year and i have to decide if i want to take AP English or AP Chemistry. I would much rather take AP Chemistry but i keep hearing that AP English is a must have AP course.

Basically, i'm wondering if AP English is a must have. I plan to apply to places like UChicago and Northwestern as an economics or statistics major.

It’s my understanding that AP Chem is more rigorous than AP English, so I would think colleges would be more impressed by that.

AP eng lang or lit? btw are u scheduling for junior? i did my scheduling and i was about to take AP Lang considering it was a must class as a lotta ppl say. But, i went with AP Chem, Honors Physics, AP Gov, and an internship. If u want to take AP Lang or Lit i would say keep ur schedule open cuz it takes a lotta timee from what i know.

there’s no such thing as a “must-have” AP course…

^^ I disagree. I think there are “must-have” AP course or class equivalent.

It’s AP Literature and i’m scheduling as a senior.

Basically my school has this rule where you can only take 5 AP Courses even though they offer 11. Anyways if i took AP Chemistry i would have to take English 4 (requirement to take English as a senior) which i think colleges might look down upon.

Which are you more interested in?

Chemistry, but only because i hate English.

But i am willing to give up my some interest if it will look better on the college app.

People usually refer to history and English courses as must-take because they’re usually required for GE, so you can get credit for them.

If you’d prefer to take chemistry over English (something I totally don’t blame you for, English sucks), then it certainly won’t make your schedule look any worse. Chemistry is much more rigorous and looks way better than English, so it’ll probably make your schedule look better.

I heard some colleges like UCLA toss out applications that DON’T have AP English. Now of course there are exceptions, but that is what my junior english teacher said. AP english requires a different kind of thinking than mathematical courses. It tells the colleges that you can handle the mathematical stuff and the deeper thinking stuff like analyzing passages and bla blah blah blah blah. Hope that helps!

Does anybody have a definite answer if it is a must?

some schools don’t even offer AP English; it can’t be a “must”…

The counselors at my school usually tell the top 10% that AP English and AP Calc are the “semi-required” AP classes, but out of our class of 350 we usually get a Harvard, Yale, MIT and Princeton.

AP English is not a “must”. I know my school, a top NE public, for one doesn’t offer AP English, which is weird considering we have like 20 other APs, but people still go to top tier schools…

I’d take Chem if you’re more passionate about it. No use putting yourself through the stress of another AP that you have no interest in.

soooo not true

UCLA apparently requires a 4.1 GPA. I’ve had friends tell me this. Where are all these UCLA myths coming from? haha

If you hate English, don’t take AP, but take honors, or equivalent and do your best. Schools won’t look poorly upon you becaue you didn’t take APENG. I think it might be seen as more important because of the writing aspect, which colleges are weighing heavily these days.

Honestly, take both, AP’s are really overrated in difficulty. If you going to take one, take chem. VERY FEW schools accept the English AP but chem is one of the AP’s that accepted everywhere (except maybe MIT and Cal Tech).

If you’re that concerned about not having AP English for your senior year, explain that your school doesn’t let students take more than however many AP’s or whatever your school does, and that you chose chemistry over English. They have a section for explanations. Take chem if that’s what you’d rather do.

i was able to take AP Eng Lang as a junior but i didnt and i signed up for regular english because tehre is no honors. I am planning on tkaing AP ENG Lang. in senior year. Colleges will not be dissappointed will they seeing me go from honors (10th) to reg (11th) to AP ( 12th).
Problem is that i have a crazy schedule for junior year and i dont want to mess up.
