I was just wondering how difficult AP English is. I'm a sophomore and was thinking about taking it next year.

Yes and no. Yes its difficult in that it can often times be a lot of work but no, in comparison to classes like Physics or Calculus, English itself is relatively easy to excel at.

AP English is basically a year long course which prepares you to write three different types of essays - the argument essay, the synthesis essay, and the rhetorical analysis essay. Each of them has its challenges but they’re all pretty easy to master. Once you can successfully write each type of essay, you’ll be all set for the class and the exam.

I think that depends on your strength in the subject. My son didn’t have any problem taking it, but English comes fairly naturally to him. I anticipate my daughter having some issues if she choses to take AP English as she struggles with writing.

It was tough for me, I had to improve a lot at writing essays, and there was a major essay due pretty much every other week. Still wound up with an A/A+ and got a 5.

Thank you so much for all the answers and advice! I think I’m a good English student so I will most likely take the course. Thanks again!

No. It’s the easiest class ever.

varies from school to school
at mine it is ridiculously demanding but at the end of the day I learned a lot and scored a 5

also ap English language and ap English lit are two different ones, which are you referring to?

Depends on your school. At my school, it is extremely difficult to attain an A in AP Lang because of how hard our teacher grades essays and the difficulty of her reading quizzes. However, almost 60% of us end up scoring a 5 on the exam and only two of 47 Lang students failed (both failed the actual class as well).
