I am currently a freshman in Spanish II, and I took Spanish I last year (grade 8). I have an A in the class and I don’t find it too hard, however I don’t really like it and I just don’t find it too interesting. I am planning on trying to get into a top school such as Ivy League, and I know they recommend 4 years of a foreign language. I would be willing to take Spanish IV Honors, but I don’t really want to take AP Spanish. I know that classes aren’t everything in admissions, but I’m just wondering, if I didn’t take AP Spanish, would it make a difference? Is AP Foreign Language a class they really look for?
I don’t have much experience regarding universities and their interests, but I’ll try to assist you.
If you continue taking Spanish (and getting good grades in that class) until your junior year, you should be fine. You don’t have to take AP Spanish if you don’t want to–AP Foreign Language is not paramount unless you want to major in something related to that. What are your academic interests? I say take the advanced classes you’re interested in, unless you want to take additional advanced classes.
Hope this helps!
If you don’t want to take a course, don’t. Colleges would rather see you take AP Physics than AP Spanish if you want to major in engineering. It’s not necessary by any means. For example, I’m taking Spanish 3 (which I get DE credit for so it’s weighted; I’m a sophomore) this year, but I don’t want to continue on to Spanish 4 next year because it’s of no interest to me and I’d rather take an AP science or Journalism than Spanish.
Self-study for the Spanish SAT II if you’re really worried. It shows you’ve achieved proficiency in the language.
