Is AP GOV worth it? Help needed please.

Hey guys, so my senior started 2 days ago and I have this schedule that I am very worried about.

All the academic classes:
AP ENGLISH &LIT
AP CALCULUS AB
AP PHYSICS C
AP GOVERNMENT
German 4

In the past Ive taken:
AP BIO
AP LANG & COMP

Ok so the only reason Im taking AP Government is because I read and hear everywhere that taking as many AP classes as possible is the best and I hear that colleges find it good, and look for people who have taken AP HISTORY/ GOV, because its one of the essential academic classes. Also my parents forced me to take it.
Ive also heard that if you want to go to a good college you must have a minimum of 5 AP classes, if I dont take AP GOV I will have 5 which is the bare minimum and I feel underdone.

However here are the problems:
I feel like Im overloading myself. AP physics is supposed to be the second hardest class in our school (AP BIO is1ST) and AP CALC is also a big deal.
And in our school AP HISTORY/GOV classes are very challenging. So what im predicting will happen is that one class will take all my time while I wont have time for the others, and thus I will lower my overall GPA, which is really important.

Also Im questioning whether I should take it because Im planning on majoring in Mechanical/Biomedical Engineering. So again, should I take it just to show colleges that ive challenged myself and taken over 5 AP classes, while risking GPA?

If you can HELP now Id really appreciate as this is a serious problem for me and my window of opportunity for dropping AP GOV for another class is limited, since the school just started. So immediate help would be appreciated.

If you don’t think you can handle the workload, don’t take it. Colleges would much much rather see you take an appropriate amount of AP classes then take too many and burn out, and 4 AP classes in one year is fine.

For colleges, especially in engineering, they would rather see you take less classes and get A’s in the ones that matter (math/science) then B’s in all subjects. While they do look closely at your rigor, they also look at how well you perform in the classes you do have. AP Gov is a very time consuming AP, with a lot of paperwork to get through, so if you feel like you’d do better on your other classes without it, then that’s probably the right decision.

I absolutely disagree with the past two posts above. AP US Gov/Pol is a challenging class, but it helps with your future very much. I am a rising junior and I took AP US Gov/Pol my sophomore year; the most important concept you learn from that class is that politics matters in the United States. It is a class to help you to get motivated in future politics, since many citizens in the United States are apathetic to what is happening right now.

I got an A in AP US Gov/Pol, so I wouldn’t say it’s too hard. Plus, I took AP Music Theory and AP Chinese Lang & Cult in my sophomore year, too. I believe you can handle AP US Gov/Pol, AP Calculus, AP Lit, and AP Physics C  Just work hard, these are not difficult classes if you have the motivation to really learn them well.

Why do people always refer to US Gov as just AP Gov - THERE’S ANOTHER ONE. Comp Gov is where it’s at.

You realize this is from 2009…

I wonder if (s)he decided to take it or not…

It could still be relevant to other people choosing schedules, I guess. :stuck_out_tongue:

I took AP Government this year; it was my favorite class, and I can honestly say it’s one of the few classes where I learned stuff that I’m actually going to remember for the rest of my life. It’s very useful.
