I need one more elective for my 10th grade schedule, and was thinking about maybe taking AP Human Geography. It seems like an interesting class, but I heard that's it's also really easy and colleges don't take it very seriously. Would it still be a good idea to take the class or should I opt for a more difficult AP or do foreign language? Thanks!

Foreign language is probably your best bet.

Foreign language.

thanks! so it’s not worth it at all?

It is, but foreign languages trump anything except core courses, to a certain extent of course

I agree that you should take a foreign language. Maybe if you have room as a junior or senior you should take it. I thought it was a really interesting class

I would only take a foreign language if you know that you will have room for it the next two years. I self studied Human Geography and got a five, so if it interests you, you can always self study.

I also agree with the foreign language, unless you already have 2 years of that language under your belt. If so, just take that language again your junior and senior year for 4 years (you might have forgotten it by then!) But if you want an easy GPA boost for class rank, AP Human Geo would be great xD AP Human Geo won’t get you any college credits, and colleges know it’s not very rigorous compared to pretty much every other AP. But it’s still an AP. If you want to look more impressive to colleges, take the foreign language. But if you really want to challenge yourself, opt for the harder AP. You said you’re interested in AP Human Geo though, so don’t let it not being hard stop you from taking it! :D

Unless it is at the expense of a core class, including foreign language.

@skieurope I meant that if the OP could take something like AP Bio instead of AP Human Geo, she should just take the one she’s more interested in. That’s why I said to not let it not being hard stop her from taking it. (That sentence sounds weird, I’m not even sure if it’s grammatically correct :P)

@LosingCrayon:
I would like to apologize first before I go into Grammar Nazi mode. (I was studying the Writing SAT section and I had a sudden rush of inspiration, so forgive me, please!)

Yeah, the sentence is grammatically incorrect.
It should be:
“That’s why I said to not let its not being hard stop her from taking it.”
The quality of not being hard is stopping her from taking it, not the course itself.
This is similar to errors made in sentences such as “him being annoying annoys me” which should be changed to “his being annoying annoys me”.

Though it’s now grammatically correct, it’s rather redundant and wordy. We can clean it up this way:

“That’s why I suggest overlooking the course’s lack of rigor in your final decision.”

@BipolarBuddhist Haha, thanks xD I understand it, now No need to apologize! I did say it probably wasn’t grammatically correct, after all!

APHG- The material is very practical and helpful and I’ve found that it has helped me in other classes as well. It is easy, but if it’s your first AP the study skills will be extremely helpful. FRQ’s are content based and not so reliant on format, so if you’re taking other AP’s it’ll be less stress for you. It isn’t recognized by many top colleges, but there are a lot of other AP’s not recognized by those same colleges. If you are confident in your self studying capabilities and are just interested in the material, I would say self-study. As long as it doesn’t interfere with your other activities or actual schoolwork, you will be glad you took the course.

Foreign Lang- I’m going to assume that foreign language is a required credit at your school. If it is, now is your time to take it. Finish off all your required credits sooner rather than later. If you want to, you could definitely take a subject test or the AP for that language, which will help you out. If it’s not a required credit, I still think it’s worth taking. You’ll be glad you took it in the long run.

APHG helped me come up with obscure examples for my AP Lang essays. But…that’s about it.
