Is AP Human, Pre-AP Biology, Pre-AP Chemistry, Pre-AP English 9, and Pre-Calc doable as a freshman?

I am up for a challenge, and I also play sports outside of school. I want to prepare myself for the rest of high school too, but I don’t want to end up with poor grades during my first year of high school. Is this all doable? I have all 4s throughout middle school.

You should do whatever comes next in your math sequence. Don’t skip anything!

So, restating your question- is taking all honors courses , plus AP HE, doable as a freshmen for an athlete? Swap out AP HE for AP Bioiogy, and that is what my S20 did. So, yes.

It completely depends on your personal capability, track record, etc. but it doesn’t look overly concerning for a prepared, capable student.

It looks like my D’s Freshman schedule, with AP CSP instead of Human and honors French instead of one of the sciences, plus honors US History, Gym, Band.

Is there a reason to take two science courses? Do you have a language course? It doesn’t really impact course difficulty, but most colleges will want to see two years of a foreign language, and many would like to see three of more.

Foreign language? Or did you already complete the highest level available while in middle school?

Yes, if you are highly motivated. I would not recommend taking both AP Bio and AP Chem as a sophomore though. Maybe try taking a foreign language or an elective instead of chem and then go pre-AP Bio → AP Bio + pre-ap chem → AP Chem. Judging by this schedule, you seem to be taking AP Calc BC, AP Chem, AP Bio, and AP Lang in sophomore year which is just asking for burnout but you could technically do it if you have epic time management. Try to have a social life and Netflix/chill time or you’re gonna be miserable. I will say, it would look pretty good on your app to have AP Bio, AP Chem, and AP Physics (preferably C) especially for a STEM major.

all of those plus spanish 2, art, and pe-1. I just didn’t include those because they are required.

regular/pre-ap biology is required before AP biology

What math classes have you already taken, and how have you done in your math classes up to now? Would you be skipping anything if you take precalculus as a freshman?

Does precalculus in your school include trigonometry, or is that a separate class?

I wouldn’t take two sciences freshman year.
Save preAP chem for sophomore year and give yourself time to adjust.
If you’re bored (and I really don’t think you will) do something good for others in your free time.

I’m taking algebra 2 right now and I have an A, and I got all As in my other math classes. Pre-calc is college algebra and trigonometry combined, but the two classes are available to take separate years as well. So no, I wouldn’t be skipping anything and yes, trig is part of pre-calc.

Ok, excellent.
So, I’d just advise you only take one science, or ask your HS GC whether you can register for both, but drop preAP Chem if you see combining all this is too much (and what you’d take in that case, if anything).

Seems like you are three grade levels ahead in math (precalculus (= college algebra + trigonometry) is typically a 12th grade math course). Why would you need to take precalculus over two years if you are good enough in math to be three grade levels ahead?

Also, why two science courses and no foreign language course?

You’ve no doubt heard the expression, “The harder they come, the harder they fall.”

Taking all honors is fine, especially in the cores if you are up for it (your 8th grade teachers reccomend it, your test scores and grades demonstrate you are ready and can handle it). However, don’t double up on science (at least until you have a handle on your cores and on the demands high school will place upon you) and don’t skip a foreign language. Now is a great time to learn what colleges want to see on your transcript (it is more than the minimum graduation requirements your high school asks).

I don’t know what kinds of colleges you hope to attend. I can tell you that you’ll be up against thousands and thousands of kids whose transcripts will look very similar to yours, even if you have very high grades in very rigorous classes. So an all-honors/pre-AP courseload is great, but don’t plan one so tough that you a) you can’t do well, and b) don’t have time to explore and grow and challenge yourself in meaningful and impactful ECs. Those ECs will go a long way in distinguishing and showcasing you from everyone else who took the same classes and got the same grades as you. Don’t underestimate their importance.

Is that your whole schedule? No foreign language? No arts courses? Just academics academics academics.

What math course are you currently taking? Is Algebra the next one in the sequence? Seems like that would come before pre-calc. Get a good math foundation and don’t be fooled into thinking that you don’t need one. You do.

Who thought of this schedule…

And what is a “pre-AP” course anyway? Is that what your school calls honors courses, or is that a name you thought of.

“I’m taking algebra 2 right now and I have an A, and I got all As in my other math classes.”

Did you have geometry before algebra 2?

If so, then it sounds like you are doing well and it comes down to what you want to do.

In my experience students who are very strong in all of the prerequisites to calculus find it to be relatively straightforward, but students who are weak on the prerequisites frequently find calculus to be tough. I am just thinking that you would only want to take precalculus as a freshman in high school if you are pretty close to certain that you can get an A (or an A+) in it.

No, I also am going to take spanish 2, art, and pe-1, but I didn’t include those because they are required and I’m just choosing what core classes to take. I am taking both algebra 2 and geometry this year (I really like math). Pre-ap is basically honors, I think. They don’t call it “honors” at my high school though.

Actually I believe College Board came up with Pre-AP classes for this year. Marketing so kids will take AP classes?

Oh no, I also forgot Spanish 3 as a sophomore.

So…if you are taking algebra 2 this year…why would you take it again next year?

Also…I’m unclear…are you currently an 8th grader who anticipates apply to colleges in four years with the intention of applying to medical school? This high school student topics is in the premed area. If you are not planning to pursue Med school http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/
Might be a better forum for you.
