We really really liked College of Charleston…thought it was a terrific college, and loved the campus and location. It didn’t have what our DD wanted. But we recommended it to several friends who matriculated and LOVED it. They got really decent merit awards that made it very affordable.
It sounds like it’s affordable for you as well. Congratulations…it’s a great choice!
It doesn’t sound like you’re going there anyway. Your dad doesn’t make the money to co-sign that kind of debt. Trust me, you’re far better off going somewhere you can afford.
@privateID , oops my bad.
Did Op fill out the CSS profile?
You state your father paid alimony. Was this to your mother? If she is not living in your home, did your non-custodial parent fill out the non-custodial profile?
Does either one of you parents own a business?
Does either one of your parents own a farm?
Does either one of your parents have real estate out side of your primary home?
Is it true that UVA doesn’t meet need for transfer students?
Meeting full need for ALL students is rare even among those schools that do guarantee to do so for their US citizen/permanent resident freshman applicants that are not on the waitlist. This info is not necessarily on the college website or advertised. The policies also change. I recommend calling and outright asking.
Hello, Virginia parent here. It is true that UVA has a strong tie to NYC and Wall Street. Their nationally ranked undergrad Commerce School with its strong financial underpinning from Alum of that school (oooooh I am freaking out with the new double space typing feature. :neutral: )…is something you have to earn entry into early in your four years at Vandy. Just wanting to make sure you have factored that reality in. I do not know if the Commerce School takes transfer students. Those who do not get into the Commerce school often choose Econ as a major. I am confused. Are you a resident of South Carolina? And you haven’t considered transferring into USC which considers business and, in particular, international business to be a point of pride? I would not underestimate the business program there for upping your quantitative studies. The GMAT has a lot of calculus on it. That said, The College of Charleston can be a fine launching place as long as you stay hyperfocused. One of College of Charleston’s greatest assets is a Boom Town economy with plenty of places to work and intern. I have a son with an MBA from Emory --earned at night and on weekends. He did not want to quit the good job he already had in ATL nor did he want to pay the full price of a 2 year MBA (finance concentration). We blew a lot of $ on his undergrad education at Duke which was perhaps not very smart since…he could have gone to his state flagships undergrad. (hello recession his senior year!). My advice to you is to strongly consider USC, or go ace College of Charleston and find great summer jobs in businesses there. Make sure to not skip Calculus courses. The class sizes re students per professor at Charleston are very good! If you stay at College of Charleston, represent your boom town region well and be proud of your school. Attitude is everything. Go get a finance entry related job for a couple years. Then apply to your graduate school with a strong GMAT and a little work history behind you. In general, MBA programs prefer applicants with work history. Debt as an out of state student at UVA is a big no-no. (Our state students suffer a bit from the reality that UVA gives away almost a third of their seats to out of staters with high stats and ability to pay cash…wish they would set a more reasonable ratio of 18% like Chapel Hill does for out of state students. We have so many deserving A students who are children of Virginia tax payers who cannot get a seat there.) Shine in your next two years. Commit to where you deposit and matriculate. Have a wonderful time in your next chapter of life in college.
To piggyback on @Faline2 's post IB recruiting for summer internships happens early in the term you will not have a UVA transcript when this happens, so most of the weight will be on your CC transcript. A lot of the resume drops are happening over the summer.

I understand that you feel that your chances for an IB internship/job is better coming out of UVA, but your chances are not going to be that big. You are looking to responsibly handle others people’s money, you must start my making fiscally responsible choices about your own finances.
