Is being a successful Athlete a large perk?

Right now I'm in two varsity sports: Indoor and Outdoor Track. I got 3rd place in the State of Maine championships as a sophomore, which at this point is pretty much indicative that I'm going to only get better from here on. If the rest of my career in high school track is very successful (meaning 2nd place or even state champ), will this really stand out to Adcoms? Or is such a thing more "typical" for the regular applicant pool at upper-tier colleges?

It is important to note that I also do theater, go on annual political conferences such as model UN/State, and volunteer regularly at the local medical clinic. So, Track isn't the only thing I do...it's just the most important.

nope cause track sucks.

If, by the time your junior year ends, your times are comparable to college runners, you would be recruitable. Coaches look for individual state championships, and excellent regional meet results, as well as your contributions to team championships.

You will also need the test scores, GPA, and class rank to fit the colleges.

Good luck with your track.

Like thenextone21 has mentioned, track does indeed suck and adcoms will likely dismiss any track accomplishments that you do achieve-regardless of their magnitude.

Yes, but in very different ways depending on whether you are recruited.

If you are good enough and can get in touch with coaches from the schools you like you can get a massive boost in admissions. Coaches (at most schools) have a lot of pull in admissions.

If you are not good enough, or for whatever other reason you are not recruited, it will be a nice activity on your resume but nothing like being a recruited athlete.

Good luck.

Actually, no. Surprisingly, I have, after inquiring at 51% of all colleges, found that track coaches have none of this “pull” that you speak of

It’s a huge boost. Try going to some national meets if you can this year, like NON or New Balance Nationals. If this is for the largest division in Maine, then you probably will be recruited. If you have good grades, scores, and recs, you should be able to get into almost anywhere.

Bottom line: Yes, it is a large perk. Very large.
