<p>I am an Eagle Scout and I was wondering if how important that is in an application. Could it be a deciding factor?</p>
<p>Why does it matter? You will put it on there either way, and you will never know what the factor was if you got in or got rejected. I am sorry, but I don't see the reason for this post.</p>

<p>It would only be a deciding factor if you're a borderline applicant. I don't think Columbia particularly needs eagle scouts, but it shows you have commitments. . . and motivation. . . . . although being an eagle scout isn't quite like being an amazing athlete or musician or journalist, somebody they already know would participate in sports, music, or publications at Columbia. But eagle scouting and participating in school things are probably related, anyway. And schools definitely love it when students focus on something a lot, rather than many things a little. But don't leave it to a hook to get you in. Make the whole app good, esp. the essay.</p>
<p>I am not trying to get on to him, and I am not saying this post is lame. I am just pointing out that there is really no way for us to tell really if it is a great hook. It sounds good to me, but we don't know anything else about the guy. If this is his only EC it might not be such a great hook. I also pointed out that it would be on his application (its a big deal so I can't imagine him not putting it on there) regardless of if it was a hook or not, and in the end he would never know if it was the reason he got in or not.</p>

<p>It's an EC, put it on the app, but nobody keeps stats on Eagle Scouts that have been accepted at Columbia (correct me if I'm wrong).</p>

O well, the fights on the berkeley boards are much worst..lol. anyway dylan..anything can be a "deciding factor" on your application..depending how you package yourself. in your other posts you mentioned that you were a sophomoRe? you sound a lot like me when i was a sophomore...always anxious to apply to college and all my upperclassmen friends made fun of me...not that i'm saying anyone is making fun of you. but depending on how you package yourself anything could be a determining factor...and you should be able to attribute your extracirriculars to your personal qualities so it doesn't look like you just did stuff for college. just my humble two cents.</p>
