The above question +

playing drums for 8 years (by the time I apply)

Youth Symphony & Sinfonia

Female applying for bioengineering

Basically, I'd just like to know if any of the above count as hooks. Thanks a bunch.

I would think it depends on the school. At Michigan, for example, not so much.

LIke the other poster said, it depends on whether the school finds itself wanting diversity in this particular area. Some schools may readily say YES, we want more Arabic representation. Some may not consider it a need at this time or recognize the need. It certainly won't hurt.

For the military, definately.

It might not be a hook at some schools.

Bump, please.

I wouldn't say it's a good hook for the top schools

you need something more to offer than just ethnicity

Not a hook, but it's an advantage (at some schools, as others said).

I doubt it is a hook, but it is a skill.

I guess I misused the term "hook" in my question. What I'm really wondering is whether it is actually considered or not, seeing as Arabs are categorized as Caucasians on college applications. But if I could make it a plus in any way, I'd love to hear some suggestions.
