Is Being Deferred Good?

Hello,

I applied early action and was deferred to both Villanova and Boston College. I read online from Boston College’s website that early action is generally more selective than regular decision and was also told in another post that many applicants that are deferred early action to Villanova are admitted regular decision. Therefore, my question is does being deferred boost your chances of being admitted regular decision, or does it have no identifiable benefits.

Well, for one positive, you were not rejected! I don’t know Villanova or Boston’s deferral rates to make an informed guess, but a deferral probably means that they need more time to evaluate your application in the context of the RD pool. It’s definitely not a bad thing. Keep showing them that you’re interested and send in any major updates. Keep up the senior grades, and I think that’s really all you can do.

Better than rejected but you can’t put I was deferred from xxx college on resume

Being deferred means that you were deferred!

BC defers everyone who applied EA except the very top of their applicant pool, and then they go on to accept a bigger group of qualified, but more average students in the RD round. Tons of my friends got deferred from BC early even with good scores and extracurriculars, but you’ll have a good shot at regular in a couple months.

Villanova’s website also indicates that EA is more competitive than RD.
