I just discovered that i am first-gen and wondering if this is beneficial. I was searching throughout the forums and found out that it is, but i do not fully understand why. Also, how much does it help you out in admissions? Is it very little, or is it a hook like being an URM. thanks.

I don’t see it helping that much. Harvard is not going to accept a kid with lackluster credentials just because they are the first in their family to go to college and had the audacity to consider a school like Harvard. It is one of those small factors that might contribute to your application but you still have to be competitive.

thanks…

It’s only beneficial at a few schools that can afford to engineer diversity of all kinds. It is a tip factor at these schools, not a hook.
