Is below a 30 really that terrible?

Is a 29 on the ACT really that bad for top schools (excluding the Ivy League)? I feel like it's really umimpressive.

no. it only looks "unimpressive" on cc, especially when people cry about getting a 35. a 29 converts to about a 1300/1600. it is in the range of a lot of the top universities (including ivys and schools like wash u...)

if you can study and take it one more time to try and break into the 30s, i would definitely give it a shot. but dont go killing yourself, a 29 is a good score

I am not a freak about standardized tests but I was a little disappointed in my 32. I would say anything in the 33-36 range is excellent and anything below is rather bad...

Yeah, sam41990, a 32...only 99th percentile nationwide. I can see how you'd be disappointed ;) (goodnatured sarcasm intended)

liz1628, a 29 is around 95% nationwide... Not a bad score at all, and certainly within the range of some great schools, though breaking 30 is a nice psychological boost. At that level, your score puts you somewhere in the running, but schools will want to see some other strong factors on your applications.

I know plenty of kids who have been accepted to U of MI with less than 30. It's a top school.

don't ever ask questions like this here. people are crazy with scores.
it should really be fine, as long as the rest of your app is strong.
