This is a serious question. While I'm enthralled to receive an acceptance, I'm concerned about the crime rate in the city of Berkeley being that I'm eventually going to have to live off campus.

Berkeley is extremely dangerous. If you come here, you will almost certainly be rape, shot, mugged, and stabbed.

The above is very true. It's particularly true for those that are ignorant and don't have any common sense. It's also true for those that don't use the search tool when asking a question that's been asked a million times here.

Education>life!!!

sorry Azure326....I post it a little faster than you....my bad.

Blah, I guess my post still holds to some degree, though...

University of California, Berkeley - Police Department

Here's a controversial statement that just might keep you safe:
Avoid walking near large groups of African American teenagers who look obnoxious or like they're still in high school.

Many serious crimes are committed by obnoxious Berkeley High kids, who don't know the consequences of their actions. Sad, but true.

it seems theres always stuff happening on late thurs nights/early fri morns (1-2ish)...

Has a Berkeley student ever been murdered while a, well.. student?

"Has a Berkeley student ever been murdered while a, well.. student?"

Yes. As morbid as this may sound, college students dying in college is not unheard of, especially when the school is in an urban setting.

i think in terms of non-violent crimes (not murder, rape, etc), there might be substantially more petty crimes than your traditional collegetown. However, Cal is very near Richmond, I think it has the highest murder rate in the US.

In terms of personal experience...My books got stolen one time. I was thinking wth.. who would want books in advanced fluid mechanics.. but otherwise, if you don't stay out too late in night and sleep on the streets, I think you would be ok.

"Has a Berkeley student ever been murdered while a, well.. student?"

One happened just last night. Still too early to tell what the motive was.

It's just common sense. Though Berkeley's crime rate MAY be higher, crimes still affect every single city university.

Richmond's problems are completely irrelevant to Cal students, unless if they live in the parts of Richmond that are dangerous. Much of Richmond is very pleasant indeed. Anyway, Richmond isn't really close to campus at all. There are sections of Berkeley that are relatively close to sections of Richmond, but those are far from campus.

SHEESH!! Berkeley is as dangerous as any other city. Get yourself some pepper spray, a flashlight/whistle thingy, and some common sense and you'll be fine.

^^ Already been posted. :D
