I'm totalli worried about the overall safety of UCB! I'm just a country girl from the safe suburbs... I'm completely confused as to whether I should attend Berkeley or not due to it safety.

I mean Oakland, a freaky place, is right next to Berkeley! N is it true there are dozens of homeless people around campus?

Basically, how is the overall safety level of UCB? It doesn't seem like a closed campus, like UVA or UMICH. Plz help me.. I want to attend Berkeley due to its prestige, but not at the sake of my safety.

Thanxx wendydai :D

Oakland’s proximity is only a concern if you live very close to Oakland.

There are a fairly large number of bums around campus, but exercising basic common sense will stop any of the legitimately crazy ones from having any reason to get annoyed with you. The sane ones know better than to mess with UC students, and will usually be very polite because they get fairly good treatment from the student body at large.

Berkeley’s only a dangerous place if you make decisions that would turn virtually any urban area into a dangerous place, and there’s a safety briefing at CalSO that’ll remind you of what those decisions are.
