I've heard stories of girls being gang-raped on the streets at night and young men being mugged and molested.. Is Berkeley truly that dangerous? I may consider carrying around a pocket knife if I decide to go.

Yeah, it’s pretty dangerous. Consider carrying around a GUN.

People like you make Berkeley dangerous indeed.

Getting raped by midterm/finals is what you should be worried about.

of course, i got raped like 6 times today already

It really isn’t a huge deal. At first I was really annoyed by all the rapings, but my third time being raped was simply wonderful. You know what they say, third time’s the charm. College is all about adjusting and experiencing new things.

In all seriousness, no. Walking alone at night is obviously not something you want to be doing all that often, but there’s a UCPD division specifically devoted to walking and driving students around late at night. Some people around here are paranoid, and there occasional incidents of bad stuff, but they generally happen to people who are out alone late at night in not-exceptionally-nice areas. If you’re not stupid, nothing’s likely to happen to you.

“rape is like being force-fed chocolate cake anyways”

-mechrocket

It could be more dangeorous, but it’s definitely dangerous enough that you better be careful and use common sense. If it’s 3am, don’t go out walking by yourself (unless there’s really no alternative), always be aware of your surroundings, and choose to travel on brightly-light streets when practical.

The magic is actually in a pepper-spray bottle; you can disable an attacker quicker and more easily than with a knife but without harming him/her anywhere near as much.

I’ve personally never had an issue in Berkeley, but that’s because I take care to not look like a target.

I heard stories about wizards and dragons. Doesn’t mean they exist. I never had an issue with walking around alone at night, although I tried to stay near bigger and brigter streets. Common sense will get you a lot further than a pocket knife.

pepper spray’s not all it’s cracked up to be. i mean, the mugger could just rip it out of your grip and use it against you.

lmao @kevrus hahaha i like that post. i bursted out laughing and that doesn’t happen often.

i agree with crowslayer on a serious note. lol

Better yet, if the mugger also brought pepper spray, you could have a pepper spray fight.

I was not excited about getting raped by finals my freshmen year…but ever since then, I just count the days until I can be abused by them again.

I can’t sit still when I think about the week of 12/13-12/17.

(but yes, it’s kinda dangerous: [UCPD Berkeley | Crime Alerts | 2010](http://police.berkeley.edu/crimealerts/2010/))

In all seriousness, as long as you use your head, you will be fine and not get physically raped; however using your head will not make you immune from raped by your classes. Both males and female instructors will rape you.

Just make sure you’re walking around in a well-lit area where there are other people, or else don’t walk alone.

I’ve walked at midnight by myself, and i’m a rather small girl who would otherwise be an easy prey, but because I walked where there were other people around it was fine.

1) dont wear anything skimpy that can get you the wrong kind of attention
2) police should be on your speed dial
3) punch/knee/kick/claw/etc at his groin and run like hell in the opposite direction

waiting4college is back. yay. (btw how is college now that your done waiting ; ] )

i agree with number #1. I have done 2, but i think it’d be kind of hard to search through my contacts to find the EMERGENCY contact. maybe if I’m running at the same time, it’d work. Iphones should have speed dial.

So there is absolutely no safety precaution against rape perpetrated by our respected professors?

none. absolutely none at all…

…just pray that they finish quickly so it doesnt hurt.
