I got accepted to Cal for fall 2009. I love the school but my only worry is that there are so many people that you don't get to develop a personal relationship with any professor or get any personal attention. I'm also afraid that all the classes are enormously large (Im from a high school where my graduating class was 80 students). Did anyone have a problem with it being too big and having too many people or is that really not an issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

hmm im alright with it. but i came from a medium size high school 600+. there’s time to talk to professors - office hours. research.

Thanks! That was what I was worried about - not having any time to talk to professors or not getting much personal help- basically feeling lost in such a large school

Do professors actually want to hear from students, though? I have a high school teacher who I consider really intellectual in general and knowledgeable in a subject that I am not quite as interested in, and sometimes I am worried about the things I say to her because I don’t want to sound uneducated!

Don’t let feelings of insecurity stop you from interacting with the faculty.

The reason you are an undergrad student is because you (and all your peers) ARE uneducated. You are there to get an education, and the professors are teaching to give an education, so your worries are groundless.

You will definitely have the opportunity to develop a relationship with the professor. However, how much you stand out in the professor’s eyes is up to you…I graduated in a tiny class too btw.
