<p>the other consideration is financial aid (assuming you need it). apply to a UC campus, and when they get your FAFSA, they very kindly hand you a list of banks that offer loans. Period. So if you are from out of state, the tuition is all on you and oos tuition isn't cheap. There are many private institutions that are equally well-regarded which will atleast give you some assistance financially. If you really want to go to Cal, maybe attend a JC here and get residency. Some of the JC's have guaranteed UC admission tracks (not necessarily to UCB, however).</p>

<p>IN-state students don't get much and oos students come in after, unless you are someone they want to recruit. Funding sucks in California now in the public universities. Blame Arnold, George, and Ronnie....</p>
