is bioengineering aka biomedical engineering good for pre med?

For college what if i decided to major in bioengineering/biomedical engineering instead of a typical Biology/Chemistry major. As long as I fulfill the requirements (prerequisites) to get in to school will this be a good decision?

You can major in whatever interests you before you apply to med school. Do you have an interest in engineering?

True, it doesn’t really matter what your UG major is. Extremely high GPA and very high MCAT score should suffice. (In other words, Biomed Engineering would be one of the more challenging paths to Med School.)

I would say…don’t major in any kind of engineering unless you have an INTEREST in engineering. Just as an aside…DD majored in bioengineering, but realized about halfway through college that she really wanted to be a physician’s assistant (she thinks). She picked up a double major in biology which better suits the pursuit of the PA program than her engineering degree did.

I have know both biomedical and chemical engineering grads who went on to med school. It is a hard major, but like the others said, it would be fine if it was something you liked and were interested in.

OP, you can google undergraduate majors and med school and you will see that you can major in what interests you. I think one of the most popular undergrad majors is philosophy. There really isn’t a ‘fast track/preferred track’ to med school. It will be your GPA and your MCAT scores.
