Hi, I am going to be a first-year bruin and I am really considering going into dentistry. However, my parents may or may not have money to pay for dental school, in the next 4 years. So my parents and I have decided that I should have a business major so that in case I can't go into dentistry, I'll still have a decent job. So my questions:

Is doing biz econ as a major and taking premed classes doable? Will it hurt my chances of having a good GPA? Have you guys heard of anyone doing this, If so what are the results?

Would majoring in biz econ hurt my chances of getting into dental school? How hard will it be to double major in psychobiology and biz econ?

What do you think I should do? (Remember having a high GPA is A MUST for me!)

Another small option: Should i take all predent classes here at UCLA and then transfer to Haas at Berkeley?

If you’re motivated and hard-working enough then majoring in Biz Econ while satisfying pre-dent courses should be very doable. Lots of pre-med students major in a non-science major while satisfying pre-med req’s. I imagine It shouldnt be any more difficult than majoing in Biz Econ then Minor-ing in something else

About 542 premeds major in biz-econ… How the eff is anyone gonna know that?

I’m pretty sure majoring in biochemistry (which probably more premeds major in) is harder than biz-econ… Shouldn’t be too difficult. If you really want to major in biz-econ (especially if you’re not absolutely sure you want to go to dental school) then just do it. It’s not like you’re double majoring here it won’t be THAT hard.

biz econ is highly competitive since you come in as a pre-major and need something like a 3.3 in the pre-reqs in order to get accepted into the major.

biz econ while pre-med is definitely not going to be easy. whether its “TOO HARD” or not depends on your work ethic and motivation.

How about studying what you love and are passionate/interested in? I am a parent and I would never tell my 2 college student daughters what to major in. One is at UCLA and I have enough confidence in her motivation and intelligence to know that she will pick a major that she loves and can see herself being involved in for a career. i guess I just find it hard to fathom kids majoring in something their parents want them to major in. Your the one going to college and it’s YOUR life! They will most likely be gone when you are fully into your career, hopefully loving what you do. Ignore these comments if your dreams, interests, and passions are identical to your parents.

^ Yeah I agree with that. And as for paying for dental school… Why would your parents need to pay at all? Just take out student loans like most doctors and dentists. you’ll be able to easily repay them if you’re a decent dentist.
So if you don’t LIKE biz econ then don’t major in it, because it will be really difficult to stay motivated and do well when you don’t even like your own major.

im interested in both fields (psychobio and econ) BUT THERE COMES A TIME WHEN U HAVE TO BE PRACTICAL AND DO WHAT IS BEST FOR U (WHICH U MAY NOT NECESSARILY LIKE)…PLEASE PPL JUST STOP WITH THE PASSION THINGY…and as for paying for dental school and taking out loans that is not relevant at this point…back to my previous question: Does anyone know any premed who is majoring in biz econ. How do they like it? How difficult is it? How MUCH do they have to study??

I don’t understand why people think it’s okay to write/say things online that they would never say in person. I’m going to assume that you’re going to study a whole lot. Many people don’t make it into business economics, and the business major here isn’t business- it’s more of economics with some accounting. You’re going to have to stay summers/an extra year if you want to finish in a reasonable time frame unless you take a bunch of classes each quarter. That said, there are two psychobiology and one psychology student on the executive board of Bruin Consulting (a student org I work with). They’re the top of their class, have had internships with top consulting/healthcare companies/firms and even an investment bank. One of them works endlessly to maintain the GPA and get all the classes in.

in case your parents dont have money to pay for dental school? if thats the case, then loans will cover you, like they do for the majority of students.

is it in case you get rejected form dental school? if that’s the case, then you are doing yourself a disservice IMO since you would have to divert your time and energy into doing well in biz-econ as well as pre-dent classes (both of which are highly competitive). instead, you could have concentrated on getting better science grades and/or doing extra curricular stuff which is essential to a competitive health application.

if you really LOVE econ and want to learn that material no matter what, then by all means do both. if you get into dental school, will you regret the time and energy you spent/wasted on biz-econ? if yes, then you should re-think this whole backup plan thing.

that’s just my take on it. if i were in your shoes, i would do psychobio and focus on getting into dental school.

this isn’t high school, where you can scrape by in anything and everything you want while doing 923250 things. taking lower div econ and/or pre-med is fine. but don’t think you can do anything and everything you want in college. put it simply: can i be warren buffet and cure cancer? sure, everyone wants to be both. but pre-med and pre-biz econ will cut you up. don’t tell me you’re smart, because you can’t stop the curves from screwing you over.

doable? yes. but you better work. odds are not in your favor. just do your research on one, and focus on that.

Hey areucool, I am pretty much in the same boat as you. I wanted to be a doctor when I was a kid, then I kind of got deterred when I heard horror stories about med school, so I started taking econ classes. I am doing well in econ classes, but not sure if I want to give up on being a doctor now, so I am thinking of the same thing as you. I’m entering my 2nd year at UCLA this fall. I’m still not sure what to do, however I think I am going to go ahead with some more science classes, see if I like them, and if I do, try to major in psychobiology, maybe with a minor in accounting. If I decide I don’t like those science classes and have no interest in them, then I’ll do biz/econ. What do you think about this plan? Entering my 2nd year I’m a little ahead for the biz/econ track… I’ve taken econ 1 , 2 and math 31a. and management 1A, 1B, and math 31B at a community college…

^Well if he can’t maintain the BizEcon GPA, there’s probably a slim shot he’ll make med school anyways so its not as if that should be an obstacle. If he has the smarts to make med school, he’d probably be able to balance both.
