I really want to transfer out of my current prep school and I think boarding school is where I want to go. But I'm really shy. I've heard that boarding schools are not the right place for shy people. I am really strong academically, I dance with a professional company, and I'm active in community service. Am I making a mistake going to boarding school? Thanks for any help you might give me.

No one can give you an all-knowing answer with just this information.
Being shy can mean many things-
Do you find it difficult to meet new people?
Do you continue to be withdrawn and shy around people after you've gotten to know them,
Or do you loosen up and become a beacon of happiness?
Do you simply find people hard to talk to?
With your extra curriculars, do you think you could come out of your shell long enough to make friends with your peers and team mates?

Once I'm comfortable I definitely warm up to people. it's the meeting and making that first step that is so hard for me

Well, you seem like you're busy, with dancing and community service.
And nobody will write you off immediately because you're a bit quiet! In fact, it may intrigue them to you even more.
You can make friends through the activities, and your dorm mates, easier than you may think. I say, figure out the logistics of boarding school before figuring if you are "too shy".
