In my opinion, it is absurd to spend that for BOCO, when he has such a good option for so much less. Regardless of how much money you had saved up for him for college, it’s nuts to spend that much on a composition major. He may want/need that money for a graduate degree. You might need that money for other purposes. If you had unlimited or extraordinary resources, sure. But I think that it would be foolish to choose BOCO over FSU, under the circumstances.
When discussing money with my kids, sometimes I find it helpful to explain to them how much it means in hours of what sort of work, at what sort of pay. For instance, as a highly trained professional earning 200K/yr, and paying probably over a third of it in taxes, let’s estimate that I got to actually get top keep keep $60/hr. Now let’s pay off 200K for that education, costing 200K more than FSU. What it means, essentially, is that I would have had to go to work for well over an extra couple of years, just to pay for that education. But kids don’t think of that. You’re supposed to go to work to buy them stuff. So let’s figure it out HIS earnings, at $15/hr, probably $13/hr take home pay after taxes, which probably would be he most he could get now with his HS diploma, and very likely what one would be earning with that music composition degree, since one would probably have to take an entry level job in some other field. Now we are talking more like EIGHT YEARS of going to work, and every single penny going to pay off that 200K debt - even more, when you figure on points and interest. In fact, he cannot even borrow it! The most he can borrow without your co-signing, is a total of 27K.
So try to explain to him, in terms that he can understand, that you do not want to do this, you do not want to co-sign for the debt, you do not want to have HIM take on that debt, and that he should be overjoyed at having this inexpensive, good option at FSU.
