People make the excuse for the recent incidents due to its urban location. But you don’t hear similar tragedies happening at The other boston schools BC northeastern MIT Harvard

2 Harvard U

13 MIT

30 -Northeastern U

BU is not on the list.

Obviously the problem I’m referring to is the recent spring of violence in the bu area, 4 homicides just this week…providing a report from 2-3 years ago has no relevance

surprised that Tufts was #1 even if it is an old report

We are in a city school, for the love of God. NU and MIT are in much worse areas. The area in which the recent homicide occurred was in Allston, off of BU’s campus. The only reason you would be there would be to party, most likely if you’re a freshman. It’s not like people are getting shot left and right on Commonwealth Avenue.

I’m a female, and have never had any incidents. I’m sick of people pointing fingers at BU being a terrible school full of rapists and shooters.

I’d suggest you visit the campus to make a better judgment, but students are very well protected here. It’s just about not walking down a dark alleyway at 2 am by yourself.

Also, there has only been 1 homicide of a BU student, that was an isolated incident.

Applefan prob didn’t hear about the BC kid

The area of Boston that BU is in seems fine to me, but f-ck, those frat boys are sexist. I wouldn’t worry about being mugged off-campus, I’d worry about being molested on-campus.

Yes, BU absolutely is safe.

As others have said, you easily could argue we are in one of the safer areas of the city. In any city though, there are certain precautions anyone should follow. The largest one is don’t walk alone late at night. In general, city or not, this is probably a good rule to stick with anywhere. If you follow that one, chances are incredibly high that you’ll never encounter any problems here. As for the sexual assault cases this semester, administration including our President have been working diligently at investigating this problem. Many students have responded with increased awareness and advocacy too.

Being safe generally requires smart decisions. Those range from making good choices about your social life to whether or not you should wander around a city alone at 2am. If you make those decisions, you are just as safe here as you would be anywhere.

As for all of the other negative press happening here right now, I hope you understand that all of these stories involve IN TOTAL about 10-15 students making poor choices. On campus, we have over 16,000 undergraduates. None of these stories reflect upon my BU experience in any way. For me, some of the major positives that happen on a daily basis here shine through in our community service. Every year, over 1,000 freshmen and many more upperclassmen staff and coordinators enter a new academic year at BU with a week of community service that logs thousands of hours in the Boston area. FYSOP, in my opinion, shows our student body at its strongest. Fortunately, the spirit of FYSOP continues throughout the school year. Every spring break, 450 students travel across the nation to participate in Alternative Spring Break trips to volunteer as well. The registration system actually broke this year because the trips became so high in demand. My own experience with ASB involved building one wheelchair ramp per day for families in need who couldn’t afford to pay contractors. In my community service fraternity, over 100 students log 25 plus hours (many going far over this number) of service each semester to area organizations ranging from Cradles 2 Crayons and Boston Rescue Mission to the local zoos. Other students prefer to be involved in making their impact through research, student government, or organizing wonderful events like “Take Back the Night”.

That’s what BU is like for the majority of students: positive, safe, and a wonderful experience. It’s easy for negative events to be picked up by the media. Just don’t forget that even though those are often the incidents that get magnified- they’re not necessarily (and in this case most definitely) not the norm.

Re: Tufts -
Please read the following article that explains how the numbers come out this way…
[Tufts Named ‘Most Dangerous’ Campus - Education News Story - WCVB Boston](http://www.thebostonchannel.com/education/25048043/detail.html)

The bottom line is that Tufts reports the events for ALL of its campuses together and this includes the medical school which is in downtown Boston, near Chinatown. That’s where the bulk of the crime is located. The Medford/Somerville undergraduate campus is pretty safe.

Also if you want to check the numbers for any school, the federal government collects these and makes them available at:

<a href=“Campus Safety and Security”>Campus Safety and Security;

Since I do live in the Boston area, I DO occasionally hear about crimes at other city universities including Harvard and MIT. Urban campuses typically have more crime.

Unfortunately B.U. has had a flurry of incidents over the past year that have generated a lot of attention. Of course, the most recent one was the homicide of a B.U. grad student in Allston, about a mile away from campus at 3 in the morning. Very sad. No arrest yet.
The other shootings were not near the B.U. campus, they were in Hyde Park, South Boston and Roxbury.

So, B.U. is as safe as any large university in the middle of a city.

http://articles.boston.com/2012-04-27/news/31420627_1_graduate-student-abuse-scandal-diverse-university

Anything can happen anywhere, but for the most part, BU is located in the safest neighborhood of Boston. The recent tragic incident of a BU student involved a shooting in Allston at 2:00 am. The details and cause of that incident is still under investigation. The stupid frat incident was also off campus and was unaffiliated with the University. The hockey players who were involved in the alleged sexual asaults were disciplined. The tragic event of the students who were studying abroad was a terrible accident with a van. BU has had some very unfortunate incidents this year but is not representative of the BU culture, and certainly not representative of the overall safety on campus.
